I hired a mechanic to provide an annual service on our 2015 Cutwater C30 with a D6 435HP engine. Because of space constraints, he said he could not access the impeller and had to remove the water pump. He then said he could not reinstall the belt single-handed and had to call for additional help. It took him six hours to replace the impeller. We are new to the boat, and this is our first service. Is this normal?

Hi there,

Although I can't give you a definite number on how long it should take to replace the impeller, six hours seems a bit high. Our bilge is not unique and other boats with these engines would have similar issues. That's the pitfall of marine maintenance: finding a mechanic who will deal with you fairly and not charge you for having to learn how to do their job. Not sure if this was a Volvo certified tech but that might be a good thing to keep in mind for the next service. I'm definitely not trying to impugn someone else's abilities, but I would look at that bill with a bit of skepticism too.
