Has anyone added a cabin door screen? I had one added to my old C-Dory that snapped around the door mounting screw and then was zippered down the middle. Looking to keep the fresh air in the cabin for Desolation and the bugs out.

Hi Don - we've only been up there once, last year, but I don't recall any bugs. Our windows and door were open constantly. A bigger concern was creating shade in the cabin (hatches) and cockpit.

Cheers,

Bruce

Thanks Bruce

For shade I cut up some of the reflective auto windshield covers( I had a few old ones laying around) I placed these between the screen and the window in the berth and 2 forward vents, this really cut down the amount of light coming through. That allowed the 2 rear ones to be opened for fresh air. At least it was cheap.

We fitted our R25 with a two piece door screen my wife ordered from the back of some magazine. We have seen the same item in a local chain here in Mass, THE XMASTREE STORE. You may have seen the item on a TV commercial. I measured the required width and height to fit the door opening and my wife altered the kit to fit the opening. We also attached "velcro' fasteners to align with the Ranger factory installed "Velcro" reverse fasteners that you attach the door privacy canvas to. The two sides close in the middle with magnetic clips. We have been using it for three seasons and it works great.

Have always wondered how well those magnetic ones worked, I assume they are the ones we see on TV ads with home/trailers/campers etc.

Like I said, we are on our fourth year with ours. When my wife bought them, she bought two. I still have one in the plastic should the present one need to be replaced. For $10 each, nothing has been lost.

We took the same approach as John. Picked up a set of the magnetic closing cloth screen doors from one of the As Seen on TV stores in a mall. The admiral altered to fit door opening and it works great. Have been using for several years with zero issues. We were on a North bound cruise of Lake Erie several summers back and had a fly invasion about 2 miles off shore. At that point we knew a solution had to be found. The magnetic screen door. For our overhead hatches I used silver HVAC duct insulation (bubble filled type) cut to fit and edged with cloth tape - have been using for four years without having to replace.

There's an R-25 a few slips away from me and they have a neat roll up/down screen for their cabin door. Next time I'm down at my boat I'll go and find the manufacture/brand for it. This R-25 was purchased used and shipped from East coast.

There is a pic of a custom made screen door in my photo album. The previous owner had it made in FL, if anyone is interested I think I have the paper work. It was quite expensive but nicely made.

Nice screen set-up, thanks for the photo

Hi Don,

I just installed a screen on our 21ec. I custom ordered the screen through a company called Bug Off Screen. The sides are velcroed, the top uses an expansion rod, and the center uses magnets. The screen works like a charm even with the narrow opening of the 21ec.

Pearl, What size screen did you order? I imagine my 27' Tug has the same door as your 21'.
Thanks, Phil

Phil,

The size I ordered was 22" x 64 1/2" for our 21ec.

I used the cabin door canvas privacy shade as a pattern, laid it over a section of nylon screen(as from a screen door), cut it out accordingly, rimmed it with Velcro. Voila! Rolls up for storage. It won't last forever but it was cheap and easy. Gary on Docky's Dream

I was at Home Depot today, saw one like Pearl purchased, so that was I bought, about $20.

Yesterday I received the fathers days solution to the Plum Island (Mass) greenheads, a snappy, clicky screen door. It was the smallest one and a single panel is almost as wide as the door itself. Mounting was accomplished with a combination of the existing loop pieces on the door frame and the ones that came with the screen. Once mounted, I cut off the excess screen and it works as advertised. The dogs figured it out without treat bribery. Purchased from Walgreens “as seen on TV section “for $9.95.
