Hello, All- we have a problem with the door on our new (to us) 2011 Ranger 27 tug. After exiting the yard for bottom paint and installation of a Garmin AIS system, we tied up in our slip, locked the door and left. Yesterday, I went to check the boat and the door key wouldn't unlock the cabin door. That key has always been a little balky, so I thought it was just the cold weather. Today I returned with our good key that has always worked and it didn't work either. The key fits in the lock fine, but will not turn the bolt out of the door frame strike plate. Has this happened to anyone else? Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Door latch problem solved for the moment. Got the door to open by shaking the door vigorously while turning the key, then cleaned everything up and locked and unlocked the door about 20 times. Now, what lubricant do people recommend for the cabin door latch in a marine environment?

I use powdered graphite, available in a squeeze tube at any hardware store. It's amazing the difference, after just one squirt.

I use a product called SailFlow. It’s available at marine supply stores and online. Great stuff for windows, latches....

Check the latch ( the part that retracts and extends into the strike plate) if the boat was towed a lot, vibration tends to wear a small notch into the latch tongue. Then when engaged the edge of the strike plate slips into the notch and then prevents turning the key to retract the latch. If you apply inward pressure on the door then you can turn the key.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that graphite lubes should be avoided in a marine environment because of galvanic corrosion issues. I have always avoided it on my boats. Has anyone found this to be an Issue?
