With three months to go before boating season starts in Michigan I've had a lot of time for thinking and planning. I've searched our forum but have not found what I'm looking for. I still need some advice from those that have added memory foam or another product to their stateroom bed to improve the comfort. Our bed is fairly comfortable however we'd like to make it more so, along with being able to make the bed easier to make. Please tell us what you've done to these ends that you would recommend and or advise against and why.

Jim and Lisa,
We went to Cosco and purchased a queen size 3 inch memory foam pad and cut to shape. It worked wonderfully and the fitted sheets fit underneath the lip of our bed. We have the R 29 though, but I don't see why you could not do that with your berth. My wife and I both sleep much better on it after we did that.

Jim,
Jess and I are still working on this. Right now we are not using the memory foam because we do like to make the bed up each day and not have the foam to deal with. Additionally I would think having the foam on top of the cushions makes it more difficult to get into the storage. I have considered removing the fabric and adding memory foam in each cushion and then recovering them. A big job that I may do some day, but until then we are sleeping comfortably on what Ranger gave us and just put a king size sheet over the cushions in the evening with some nice fleece blankets. So far this has worked for us.

Jim,

Karin and I bought the 4 inch King-size memory foam from Walmart, then cut it to the V-berth shape with an electric knife. We took the original V-berth pads out, layed them on top of the memory foam, then marked the outline of the V-berth pads around the edges onto the memory foam, with the markings to be used as a guide in the cutting. Karin then folded the excess of the fitted cover that came with the memory foam underneath, tied in place with suspenders with clips on the ends.

The comfort of the bed is immeasurably better. We use a fleece blanket (or 2) on top of the fitted cover.

If I need to get to the storage underneath the V-berth pads, I roll the memory foam up to one side and hold it in place with a strap wrapped around it.

We did the 3 inch, outlining the pattern and cutting with electric knife. Should have done 4 inch.

Wow, these are great ideas! Believe it or not two self inflating camping mattresses we picked up from an outdoors store make a huge difference. And, the're easy to deploy and stow.

Our boat came with a custom memory foam mattress from the factory, so factory cloth and each piece looks just like the original just a couple of inches thicker.

Jim, we used a memory foam gel topper from Costco. I believe it was 2.5 inches. I took measurements and cut it to fit inside the bolsters on each side. I thought if I made it the same size as the cushions, I would have modify the way the bolsters are attached to sides of the vee berth. I also cut it into 5 pieces to lay on top of the cushions. We thought it would make it easier to access the storage under the cushions. It did not. We insert the pieces into the fitted cover that came with the topper, not an easy job, but once done it is very comfortable. We fold the excess cover under the topper, giving us a fairly smooth top surface. We can roll the topper back to access the storage. Again not easy, so we only try to put things in the storage that we do not need often.

If I had it to do over again, I would not cut it into pieces to fit the tops of the cushions. I would leave it in one piece.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas. It sounds like 4" is best and one piece ideal and only stow items in the berth lockers that you don't need on a day to day basis. If anyone else has additional thoughts please chime in.

Hi Jim,

Long time no see. We used the 3 inch and cut it in half like others. Then Carol used sheets to make pillow type cases that zip up all around for each half. That way when we're ready for clean sheets we just flip them over. That cuts the laundry chore in half, too. Comfortable and very easy to deal with.

The approach I used on Adagio is a little different. . .

1. Start with 2 1/2" memory foam and cut to size so that it fits snugly inside the port and starboard bumper cushions.
2. Cut and sew new seams for the cloth foam mattress cover.
3. Cut and sew a king size thick, high quality quilted mattress cover with synthetic down filling, fitting it over only the memory foam.
4. Use a hi thread count good quality sheet set. The fitted sheet fits over the foam mattress and quilted cover combo without modification.
5. Place the top sheet on the memory foam combo, loosely tuck under the forward end of the sheet, mark both sides, cut and sew seams, creating a pocket in forward end, but leaving enough width and length to provide a loose fit over your feet.
6. Top with a thick high quality synthetic down comforter, fitted as in step 5.

The resultant combo is bulky, but either side can be lifted up to provide relatively easy access to the storage compartments. It is fairly easy to make up each morning, and incredibly comfortable.

I bought 3" foam from Overstock.
Cut it to fit the existing mattress pieces using an electric carving knife.
Took it to a mattress manufacturer in town and had the pieces covered in cloth.
Throw a sheet over that - sloppy because not form fitting.
We use sleeping bags - they make bags formed to the vee berth and I may look into those
Comfortable but the piece over the drop down tends to slide when crawling around.
Easy to flip up the bunks to get to the lockers.

Better solution?
Well, the almost new 43 foot Silverton across the dock, with the ankle deep champagne carpet that we visited comes to mind 😱

Oh yeah. And I had a tapered piece of memory foam cut that we slip under the covered pieces at the head board.
This raises the head and shoulders just a bit and compensates for our boat's tendency to sit just a bit bow up making your feet slightly higher than your head.

This was an inspiring thread. So inspiring I ordered a king size 3" Visco2 ventilated mattress enhancer from Amazon (also free shipping)

Cut it as directed above and just covered with a thick felt fitted sheet. We slept on it this weekend in San Francisco. Other than the "minty" smell they add to cover up the volatilizing foam, it was fantastically comfortable. Thanks for this thread. It improved my marriage!

We have just added the four inch memory foam to our 21EC. Spending a few days in the Loggerhead marina, Stuart Fl and got a much better nights sleep last night.

Just had a manatee stop by to lunch on the growth at our dock.
