Hello new guy here. Just bought a 2016 Cutwater C28. I’m wondering how the AC unit operates and if I can run it while just the engine is running and no generator. Also can this be done while cruising and still be able to draw water in through the thruhull?

Generator needs to be on and your speed should not exceed 12 knots to enable the pickup to actually permit water into the system. We typically cruise even slower so no issue and we have not had reason to run fast on very hot days to test that suggested limit.

Here’s what the A/C on my R-23 pulls while on batteries (This was at night, so no solar help, either)

My engine outputs about 30 Amps at idle, maybe 40 at cruise. The R-23 has a scoop-style through-hull, so I don’t have to worry about speed. I can get about 2 hours hours of A/C on my batteries while cruising. If I had a built-in generator, I’d run it anytime the A/C was on.
