Is the Desolation Sound Cruise all booked? Wondering if some of us might go there together on different dates but still using the same Marinas for the crossing from Vancouver Island. Our boat is a new Ranger tug 29 S. There is comfort in having at least a small group crossing together. " Spare time".

Hi!

The factory Desolation Sound cruise is fully booked but that is a great idea! This is a great spot to get a group together for a cruise. Email me directly if there is anything I can do to help facilitate your trip. sambisset@rangertugs.com

I know this is an old post but we would like to go to desolation sound next spring/summer. I am buying a 2014 R29 so plan to do more cruising with my wife. I currently have a 24’ SeaSport Explorer and have travelled from the San Juan’s to Rivers Inlet for fishing but never cruised Desolation sound so an organized group trips sounds appealing.
A question I have is as a high school student in the 60’s I went to Malibu and have been reading up on Chatterbox falls and crossing the Malibu rapids. My question is that it looks like it’s a long run up Jervis Inlet, is their fuel available anywhere on the inlet and if you plan to spend time in Desolation sound is it worth the extra time to run to chatterbox falls.

You can get fuel at “Backeddy Marina”, from there its about a 40 mile run up to Malibu Rapids and then Chatterbox Falls.....so an approximate 80 mile round trip. Is it worth it? That depends on the person and weather conditions but for us we feel this is a remarkably beautiful and picturesque trip and therefore well worth the time taken.

We have been up there, and it is well worth the journey. As the r29 tug holds 150 gallons of fuel, and we filled up in Pender Harbour, I didn't even think about the refuel.

The scenery is fantastic, we just slowboated up there, hooked ourselves to one of the Mcdonald island buoys, had a great day, and slowboated back the next day. We left Malibu about 8:30 and were in Sturt bay on Texada by 4 in the afternoon. I think we burned maybe 30-32 gallons total due to the detour. We were under 100 gallons by the time we dropped anchor in Sturt Bay. There are tons of places to fuel up in Desolation, We topped up in Lund the next morning, grabbed a bunch of cinnamon buns, and headed North.

If you have the time, I would do it.

You are in position to set up for a 2020 Desolation Sound cruise with Ranger Tugs next July as a new RT owner. Typically RT requires a Points North seminar in April and a weekend rendezvous at Poets Cove in May as prerequisites to the DS trip... sign up early. We went to DS this summer with RT, and I led a small group of (6) fastboats to Chatterbox Falls later in August... both trips were fabulous and highly recommended!

Water and fuel replenishing was never a problem.

Thanks, do they post signups on this forum or do you need to register somewhere else?

Is there a typical time frame for the factory cruise in July?

You can see the dates for last year's cruises here. They usually take place around the same time each year based on how the calendar falls.

Cheers,

Bruce
