Ceiling Mount Rod Holder

After doing some searching for a mass market rod holder to get my rods out of the v-berth, I decided to make my own. I used the existing screw holes for the ceiling trim to mount it. As long as they don't fall out, since I'm not sure what they screw into on the backside, I think it should work well.

I mounted a Dubro rack in the cabin. I also used the existing trim holes, the cabin head liner is secured to 1/4" plywood on my boat. The Dubro system has a very low profile and looks good also.

Interesting, I've been thinking about Ceiling Mount RHs ever since I got the boat. However, the C302 has a TV and a rather silly chandelier to deal with. I'll take another look at what is possible and may lose the chandelier since it's clearly not for use in the open ocean...the bulbs pop out on every bump and I'd happily replace it with something seaworthy if I could find an elegant solution.

I haven't done wood working other than watching it, what kind of wood is that? did you just cut out the shape, drill the holes, and round it over with a router, sand and finish?

1. What kind of wood and where did you get it?
2. What kind of finish?

Yes, more or less what you describe. I got the wood from Rockler online. It's 1/2" cherry wood as I think cherry is what's used by FM, at least on my boat. I used some old pine wood to make a beta version first, actually I made 3 I think, before I was happy with the design. I cut the base shape using a table saw, drilled out the holes for the rod ends, then used a router to round all the edges, including inside the holes for the rod ends. I finished in teak oil, but I think Seafin Teak Oil is what FM uses. I ordered some but it arrived after I was otherwise done. At some point I may take them down and use the Seafin to apply more finish. I'm happy to give more details if you want, both on design as well as process.
