Chafing Engine Hoses

Dave: Ranger is a bit sensitive to the chafing hose issue and revealed little information about this and no mention of brand or type of material was given. Sorry.... 🙂

There are numerous New RangerTugs System-Hoses that were factory added during engine installation, are dangerously chafing against engine surfaces. These hoses, once worn through could lead to engine failure. Check your engine for worn hoses, make corrections, and Report these numerous Major Malfunctions!

Hi guys: good feedback wrt the chafing of hoses, both fuel and water heater. My heater hoses do not appear to be having any chafing problems but the fuel hoses did. My 2009/2010 R21-EC has the 3YM30 Yanmar engine. Soon after acquiring it I noticed that the two 6mm (1/4") fuel hoses (supply and spill return) were chafing a little against the sea water pump housing face plate when the engine was running. A simple fix: I merely encased the entire vertical length of hose/s (about 30cm in length) in fairly stiff, but also flexible, PVC reticulation pipe. I cut it to size and sliced it lengthwise so that it slipped over the two fuel hoses. No clamps required as it is a snug fit and stays in place, irrespective of engine vibration or revs. Problem solved. Hope this helps. Stevan

Hi 'Lady Jane': Check out my photo album - I have added two photos, showing the fuel hose protective sleeve I installed to avoid vibration contact with the sea water pump housing. You can also see that I have now installed the SpeedSeal Life device on my sea water pump. Kind regards

Hi Baz: Yes, I am impressed with the engineering standard of the SpeedSeal components - very solid brass cover plate and well finished off. Once I get under way next week and assess it for leaks, etc I will post my results. Also, one small question, which you or one of the other 'Nuts' may be able to answer: in your opinion, do you think that I should install spring/tension washers under the SpeedSeal knurled bolts? I was wondering about engine vibration possibly loosening them while under way. Has anyone else found this? Your thoughts? Regards
 
Stevan47...Argumentatively, one of the best methods of securing the SpeedSafe cover plate mount bolts that you're referring to is by twisting .032 stainless steel solid safety-wire 2 bolt heads together. (First drill a safety wire hole in each bolt head if one's not already there). The easiest way of "Running" safety wire is by using the single strand method. This will only "Daisy Chain" the bolts together in a loose, unsecured fashion. Basically, the only worldwide "Approved" method of safety wiring is by using the twisted-double-strand method, securing Only 2 bolts (max) together. Always apply Marine-Grade Anti-Seize compound to the bolt threads prior to installation. It's available at Amazon.com among others.
Also, your anti-chaffing idea really works great when the Factory "Blue-Anti-Chafing Material" is missing from wherever needed,

Hello Stevan,

i've had the Speedseal for a while now and have had NO issues with the knurled bolts loosening. Finger tight works fine and stays tight. No special washers necessary in my opinion.

"Wiring" the bolts in place would be a bad practice as this makes checking/servicing/replacing the raw water impeller much more difficult. The WHOLE purpose for the Speed Seal is to make servicing the impeller faster (and to make the impeller LAST LONGER). So complicating the kit with wires...YIKES.

Thanks guys: appreciate all the great advice and suggestions. For the record, I went to sea last week and the Speed Seal device worked really well: no leaks and no overheating. All good and also looks great too. Kind regards
 
Quick, easy, & worry free, safety wiring safeguards bolts from ever backing off when understood and done correctly. Anyone unfamiliar with the correct way of safety wiring can Google/YouTube for the most invaluable wiring techniques. For securing a vibrating nut or bolt, I'm not saying it's the only way. It's the best way.
