Hi friends,

I am planning to have a "chain claw" or something similar that will take the pressure off the windlass. Currently I wrap the line around the cleat behind the windlass when I have the 100 ft. of chain out.

I plan to switch to the Rocna 15 from my Rocna 10.

I wonder what the size of our chain is on the now-discontinued R-29? Is it 5/8 or 5/16 or? Also does anyone know that in mm? Hopefully the chain size is determined by the weight of the boat, and not a factor in switching out an anchor.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Anne, Chain is generally controlled by your windlass and the rope/chain gypsy. Check the manufacturer of your windlass and the model number. Ranger should be able to help on the model on the previous Tugs, but I should think 5/8" would be a bit large and would probably say 5/16" would be more in keeping with your new anchor. Check to see if it is high tensile chain, it has a stamp mark on the chain links, this tells you what grade it might be just to double check the manufacturer.

As an aside I really enjoyed your posts on your trip to Alaska last year, and compliment you on your accomplishments. Dream large and go for it!
