How long does it take to get through the Champlain Canal. We have never gone through a lock before. We have a 25 Ranger Tug.

That is a loaded question. It depends on where you want to stop and stay and sightsee. I have gone from Newburgh, NY to Burlington, VT in less than a week and stopped and saw many things along the way. After the first lock you will be a pro.

Have fun and smell the roses along the way.

We spent six weeks on the Erie Canal and thereabouts... sure, you could cover it in a few days, but enjoying all the great towns along the Erie, Champlain, and Oswego, as well as the Finger Lakes and the Hudson River is the difference between making miles and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

As far as the locks in the New York Canal System go, if you are trailering there, stop to watch boats go through a lock. You will immediately see the process and be more comfortable. Things you will absolutely need: good fenders, a boat pole or two, gloves that you can get grubby if necessary, line that you can wrap around their cables... and most importantly: time to enjoy it all and a spirit of adventure.

Pick up a New York Canal System Guide Book. This will tell you the size and height of each lock, and other features.

Good luck with the trip!

It is about 100 miles from Waterford to Whitehall. I have done it in a day but usually take two or three and enjoy the trip.

Best places to stop are the free town docks at Waterford, Mechanicsville, Fort Edward, and Whitehall. Last year Waterford started to charge for electricity but the rest provided free electric and water and allowed you to stay two days. Also free self serve pump out at mechanicsville. All have just a short walk to restraints and quaint little main streets stores.

Several marinas are also available for a fee and you can tie up at any of the lock walls for the night, no charge.

It is a great trip, I have done it at least a dozen times and will be doing it again this year.
