We spent six weeks on the Erie Canal and thereabouts... sure, you could cover it in a few days, but enjoying all the great towns along the Erie, Champlain, and Oswego, as well as the Finger Lakes and the Hudson River is the difference between making miles and thoroughly enjoying the experience.
As far as the locks in the New York Canal System go, if you are trailering there, stop to watch boats go through a lock. You will immediately see the process and be more comfortable. Things you will absolutely need: good fenders, a boat pole or two, gloves that you can get grubby if necessary, line that you can wrap around their cables... and most importantly: time to enjoy it all and a spirit of adventure.
Pick up a New York Canal System Guide Book. This will tell you the size and height of each lock, and other features.
Good luck with the trip!
