Subject: Changes to R-27/OB shown at Seattle Boat Show ?

I'm unlikely to get down to the Seattle Boat show this year and it's ongoing at this time. Can someone who has attended this show detail what changes (if any) are being shown for the R-27/OB model ? Photos would be good along with any descriptions.... Thanks. 🙂

I asked if they were going to have the "Boat lift" there and was told no. Darn it, I want to see this thing!

Most notable was a change in the outboard from Yamaha to Suzuki, both main outboard and kicker motor. The kicker motor also has fuel injection.

Any idea if this is a permanent change to Suzuki or temporary until Yamaha can provide their OB's again? I heard that Yamaha can't keep up with demand for the 300.

Interesting. We had Suzuki's on our C-Dory. Great motors. I really like the fuel injected kickers they came out with. I would have eventually bought one if we kept that boat. I'm glad we have the Yami 200 on our R-23. It will make for a good comparison. So far I'm liking it very much!

The RT website still references the Yamaha 300HP for the RT27OB.

What's a "Boat Lift"?

It's a ghost.... a holograph-like thing that sits over the outboard and obscures it completely and displays what looks like a dinghy...

We just came back from the SBS. The R-23 on display also had Suzuki's hanging off the bracket. I spoke to Andrew and he mentioned that Yamaha has a big backorder on their engines and they decuded to go with Suzuki's to fill their orders. As I stated above, I think Suzi's are great motors too. YMMV.

I've been told the back order issue for Yamaha is until June 2018. Will RT then switch back to installing Yamaha motors in June and onwards ? It's good that RT can adapt to the situation otherwise they would surely be in a bind. 😱

I was reading this post and was surprised to see the outboard motor change. I think Suzuki is a good product. Part of the product is how well the dealer is able to service the product. When Ranger/Cutwater took on the new venture of outboards and picked Yamaha as the power for their boats. I would hope they got all their dealers on board. It is quite costly to stock parts and set up a service department to service an outboard line. I did a quick search of Ranger/Cutwater dealers and looked at their Web sites. Most of the dealers serviced Yamaha but none serviced Suzuki. Being an outboard mechanic for years I know that the basics are all the same. The shop tools and electronic hardware and software to trouble shoot and repair are different. The dealer set up of parts is all different. Technician training ,which is required ,is different. Dealer prep and engine set up,rigging is different. Are all the dealers now taking delivery of Rangers and Cutwaters set up to provide this service? This is one complaint that I had with Ranger/Cutwater when we purchased our boat. The dealer we purchased the boat from was not a Volvo dealer and did not have anyone on staff that could do the Pre-delivery inspection required by Volvo. This needs to be done by a certified Volvo technician. I was told it would be set up at a later date. It became my problem now. Warranty papers were held up, Customer service from Ranger/Cutwater told me to work with my dealer. The dealer really didn't know what was involved in the PDI. When the dealer finally got a technician out to my boat he came to change my oil. I had seventy hours on the boat and the complete 50 inspection and fluid and filter changes had already been done ( by me). I worked with this technician and set up a plan to complete the PDI and it was finally completed 5 months after delivery. A selling dealer should be a complete servicing dealer. Just my opinion! I like Yamaha better then Suzuki just my opinion!

From what I have heard, Yamaha is back ordered on their 300's and will be until the beginning of July. Ranger had a choice, deliver no 27/OB's until July or use another engine. My dealer has sourced Yamaha 300's from somewhere and my boat is being shipped without an engine and my dealer will install a Yamaha 300 on my boat when it arrives. I wonder how many other dealers are able to go this route as well. My dealer told me that when the Yamaha 300's are available again in July, Ranger will go back to outfitting the 27/OB's with Yamaha engines. He gave me the impression that using the Suzuki engine is a temporary thing due to the Yamaha shortage.

I have to wonder what has caused the 'backorder' situation for Yamaha. Lack of parts, major re-design in the offering, labor strife, emission certifications, erroneous forward-looking marketing demand for the engine, RT simply ordering too many engines, F300 being replaced/discontinued in favor of a newer model, , etc.

My point is, what has caused Yamaha to get themselves into this position ?

I've read these snippets....

Yamaha is a big, mature company and to have an apparent shortage of a product that is apparently popular from some accounts and to leave some hanging with orders suggest that they might have a supply chain problem.

I heard of two repowers that said the 300s are on backorder because of the hurricane insurance claims.

just purchased (in process actually) My 2018 27R has the 300 Yamaha OB.

this outboard supply issue has been going on for a long time. a friend lost the whole of last year due to lack of engine availability during a forced repower. its not hurricane induced only.
they either have too limited production capacity or some other bureaucracy stopping imports
