Subject: Charcoal filter for holding tanks vent

There have been numerous posting about the need to install a charcoal filter in the holding tank's vent line to reduce the unpleasant smells that occur when the holding tank vents.

On some boats the vent line can be somewhat easy to access and an inline charcoal filter can be installed, and many say this does eliminate or reduce the smell issue.

I'm wondering if there's some sort of filter that can simply be attached to the hull where the vent hole is and serve just as well as an inline filter and offer a much easier installation and the annual replacement chore ?

The smell is obviously obnoxious, but my family members always make a joke out of it, but would like to avoid this conversation aspect. 😉

I have 2 items to review for you regarding this aromatic delight!!! First off I read an article a couple of weeks back about flushing out the black water tank hoses from the sea strain. Buy some white vinegar, close the thru hull and flush the toilet. Open the sea strainer cover and fill with vinegar n flush the toilet. Go back n fill the strainer up with vinegar n this time fill the bowl up by pushing the add water button on the toilet to let sit for a few hours. After you’ve added enough to empty the strain of the vinegar fill any remaining vinegar into the strain, put the lid back in n open the thru hull handle. Let this all sit for a few hours and then flush the system. This, according to what I read kills inline bacteria n parasite found in salt water n kills odors from the hoses into the tank. Second item is the charcoal filter. I installed mine on the inside if the hull at the vent to the outside. In order to do this you need to take some panels down in the cave in order to access the vent hose. Others have installed at the tank, easier to swap out but subject to easier contamination from close by back wash from the black water tank.

I made my own filter from PVC 1.5" pipe and fittings. Than filled it using a Big Orange refills.

Works great!

Thanks Jim.....I'll look into that process for sure. 😀

P.S. I do like the phrase "aromatic delight!!!" (ha ha, very good). I'll pass this one along in our next family discussion on the boat.
