Charging starting battery before ACRs

My starting battery does not charge from alternator. It is a 2008 Ranger 25 classic with the 110 Yanmar. It does not have ACRs and I have no idea how the alternator charge voltage is supposed to get to the starting battery. Any info you could give me would really help. House battery charge just fine.

Follow the cables on your start battery. There must be some other input for charging. Either shore charger, alternator or solar.

Of course it is possible that your battery is bad and no longer takes on charges. If you have a parallel switch you may be able to force charge along with house if it is wired as such

The tugs have undergone many changes in wiring and there is not one schematic that describes it all. A bit digging into the wiring will teach you valuable knowledge about your tug, perhaps useful in a critical situation. Also don’t assume that just because there is no extra wire at the battery nothing else is connected to it. The junction may be somewhere else even if it is not supposed to be that way. For instance the alternator may be connects to the starter which in turn is connected to battery and delivers charge that way. In that case perhaps the alternator is bad.

ACRs are another beast entirely and have posted about their installation and use in several postings and how ranger is wiring them incorrectly in some cases.

My 2008 R-25 with the Yanmar 110 has two ACR charging relays. It was built early in the model year; the 6th hull, so I suspect that most, if not all of the model year is similarly equipped. The relays are located to port of the engine, on the rail between the generator compartment and the engine compartment. This is forward of the buses that connect to the batteries. A red wire comes up from the alternator to the first relay which is connected to the second relay and wires go on to the battery banks.
