Wondering - As a total novice to marine tech - referencing a R27 (2012) with Garmin 5000 installed - how dated is the plotting and nav hardware, how hard is it to update software - or is this unit (and other tech) now so dated that it is deemed as Legacy products with no support or updates available?

I am going to guess your boat is a typically equipped 2012 R27 that has a NEMA 2000 network.

These instructions will update the operating software on all Garmin components on that network. It will NOT update the maps. Google “Garmin 5000 marine software update.” That search should bring up a link to a page on the Garmin website where software updates in a bundle for all Garmin components on your NEMA network can be downloaded to an SD card. Look under the “Legacy GPS Map” section. The SD card must be no larger than 32GB. After downloading, take the SD card to your boat, turn on the chartplotter and all other Garmin components on the NEMA network, insert the card into the SD slot on the chartplotter and then follow the on-screen instructions on the chartplotter.

To update the maps will require buying an SD card with the updated maps on it or downloading the updated maps to an SD. Then the SD card with the maps will have to be inserted into the chartplotter and run from there. The SD will have to remain in the chartplotter.

Many many thanks for this advice!
