Chicago boat show

We have owned cabin cruisers since I was 19 years old and we are now considering slowing down and moving into a small trawler type boat. The Ranger 31 or Cutwater 30 have interested my wife and I as we are wanting to explore new areas on the great lakes and be able to tow across the county to visit new areas. We are in the early stages and are probably still a few years out. We have never been in a Ranger tug or Cutwater boat. Does anyone know if Ranger or Cutwater will be participating in the Chicago Boat show? If so which boats will they be bringing? Thank you

Yes we will have both Ranger Tugs and Cutwater Boats there at the show, the dealers would be Reed Yacht Sales for Ranger and Manitowoc Marina for Cutwater. I believe they should have both the R31 and the C30 there but you can contact them and make sure so you are able to look at both and compare them side by side. Enjoy the show and hope you become part of the Ranger/Cutwater family!!

My wife & I spent years (longer than 6 years) looking at Ranger Tugs. We set our sites on the R29 Classic and two years ago almost pulled the trigger on a good used one. After the survey, my wife & I re-grouped and came to the realization our style of boating was more of a “turn the key & go”. I’m not the most mechanically inclined anymore. Used to work on my ‘65 Pontiac when I was 17 years old. But those days are looooong gone and can’t keep up with advancements in technology. The single diesel is efficient but requires much more maintenance and attention than what I was willing to spend – time & knowledge wise.

We decided to sit back a bit and see if another good, long ranging coastal cruising/Great Loop boat would come along and then Cutwater came out with their C302 outboard. After working with several dealers throughout the country (we reside in the middle of the country) for 9 months trying to schedule a sea trial, we were finally able to spend two days sea trialing the C302 at Manitowoc Marine. Ended up getting the last production slot for Spring/early Summer delivery.

My point is, you’ll be happy with Manitowoc Marine if you decide to go with a Cutwater and depending on your boating style & price point, give the C302 consideration.

Andy, We too were potential Ranger Tug Buyers and were dealing with Reed Yacht Sales, Grand Haven Michigan. We were set on a 25 Ranger then 27 Ranger I liked both. Because of the berth configuration and pilot house design we changed our minds and purchased a Cutwater from Brent Reed ,he was a Cutwater and Ranger at the time, now sells Ranger only. If you have interest in Ranger, Brent always has a nice display at the Chicago Show. He is a Good person to deal with, no BS ,honest guy.

My wife and I are in the same proverbial boat. (Sorry, had to do that.)

We have our hearts set on a 2015 or newer R29S, so we may be competing for the same boats. Not likely to buy until we can pay cash sometime in 2019. (Damn delayed gratification.)

My point is Reed Yacht Sales have been so helpful and accommodating. We sea trailed a new R29S this past August and were sold on it being our next boat. Everyone at the Reed company made it comfortable and informative for new trawler/tug people.

So, whatever year and model you choose, the Reed experience was top notch. Pretty sure you won't be disappointed when you meet them in Chicago.

Good morning Andy,

I wish that I could go to this boat show as well, I have a question about your post, you mentioned that you wish to pull the RT31 or CW 30 all over the country, is this an easy thing to do in the USA as this boat is a wide load and that a permit is required in different States? Up here in Canada, it can be challenging sometimes... As far as I know, the RT 27 and CW 28 and smaller models are the tugs that can be towed without a permit on the road.
