We are planning to circumnavigate Vancouver Island this summer. We are wondering if there are any other tugnutters that might be contemplating the same trip. Also if anyone has any suggestions or cautions, please feel free to comment or pm us

I haven't circumnavigated VI, although by sailboat from Victoria I've been as far north as Tofino on the west and Port McNeil on the east.

The hard part is the top half of the west coast -- long distances between services (fuel!) and potential of storms.

This is a link to a short article on the VanIsle 360, a sailboat race from Nanaimo to Nanaimo, 580+ miles counter clockwise around VI. This is from 2013 but nothing changes up north. This race will be done again this summer.

I would not attempt it in an R25 as the distance between Uculeut and the north end of the island is at the extreme edge of your fuel and rescue is sketchy.

Having said that -- all the people I know who have done it have had a blast. Some blasts were fun, some not.

Lots of info on the east coast of VI (Waggonners, for example) but not that much on the west coast as it is quite isolated, particularly north of Uculeut.

I'm in Victoria, so PM me if I can be of any use to you.

Thanks for posting the link, Jim. If you dig around a little more on the Waggoner site you'll find the rest of my trip reports from my trip around Vancouver Island.

Fuel is available in each of the sounds on the west side of the island, so range really isn't an issue. The biggest challenge is likely weather. Be particularly cautious at Nawhitti Bar, Cape Scott, Brooks Peninsula, and Estevan Point. When the weather is right, go, and when it's not enjoy poking around the protected sound that you're in.

I found Quatsino Sound and Kyuquot Sound had few cruising boats. Columbia Cove and the Bunsby Islands, just south of Brooks Peninsula, are magical...probably my favorite part of the west side of the island.

Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound are fantastic as well, with a few more facilities and boats.

Go to Hot Springs Cove, but go early or late in the day. During the day tourists arrive by the dozen in sea planes and boats. The hot springs are best enjoyed without the crowds.

Clayoquot Sound has lots of anchorages and surprisingly few cruising boats. Tofino is a neat place to visit but the moorage situation is pretty awful. Not enough space and strong currents.

Barkley Sound has the best cruising of any of the sounds but its also the busiest. It's the only sound where I consistently shared anchorages with other boats. Ucluelet has an excellent large marina. You could always take the bus up to Tofino from Ucluelet.

Let me know if you have specific questions. The trip around Vancouver Island is fantastic and totally doable in a R25. Just plan on being self sufficient and patient with weather,

Thanks for the info, 20dauntless, Lobo and James. Both articles are very informational.

dkoivu-
We are looking at it in 2016. I will keep in touch and get your thoughts/advice if you do it this year, if you delay a year we might be able to go with you in our R27, Bobolink.
