The following information was given to me by Mark Mansfield of Ranger Tugs:

"We always start a NEW model with HIN 10, then the following year with 01."

My HIN is 2719. Because the R-27 is a new model for 2011, YOLO is the 10th R-27 in production. So, for the model year 2012, the first R-27 will have an HIN of 2701. 2719 will actually be the 19th R-27 in production in model year 2012.

And so on down the line........

Very complicated. :?

In order to know where in the total production run my R21EC fits, I have to know all of the years of production and the number of boats made each year. My poor wife is used to my sailboats and other powerboats. When I told her my J80 was HIN TSP80289L900, she knew it was 289th boat and it was built in Sept. of 2000 (over 1,000 built by 2010). I guess our R21EC with a HIN of US-FMLT2127J809 means it was the 28th built in 2009. Not only is my wife confused, so am I. Who knows where in the total production of R21ECs Tuglet fits? I'd need to know production numbers in the first year, the second year and etc.

Almost the first question asked by a buyer of a used boat is "what is the hull number?" Why? Most folks look for as new a boat as they can find.

That is the best I can do. I may have misinterpreted what Mark wrote, but I don't think so.

Ping Mark or Jeff directly. They are very responsive. They can tell you how many are built each year. It seems they have a very firm production schedule.

ummm, the serial number on Levitation is 2510... According to that fella 10 would be the first in the production run... According to the factory that I just ordered parts from 3 minutes ago it is the tenth R25 built, just like the number says...

And the beat goes on.

I understand the first part. My hull number is ---2713E011 and I am the third 27 off the production line and it is a 2011 model. I sort of lost it after that. It seems like the 9th one off the production line this year will be 2719. So when are you expecting delivery? Sounds like next year.
I guess we are just happy to have our boat and be part of the Tugnutters.

All looks to be as clear as mud !

Our hull number is going to be ANZ 21B2310 (Ours is built to Australian and New Zealand Standards) What does the "B" stand for ? Does that mean ours is the 23rd to be built in 2010 but is a 2011 model ?

Build doesn't start to October 2010.

Geoff

Geoff, A=January, B=February, etc. 23=23rd of the month, 10 means year 2010. They can switchto the 2011 "model year" whenever they make a design change. My car is a 2001 but was delivered in July of 2000. Boats do the same thing.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

Not sure how that works, if our boat is to commence in October 2010 shouldn't the alpha code be "J"for October, so where does the 23 come from unless that is going to be the start date (23rd October), if this is correct Ranger do very well predicting the start date for a boat ordered back in February 2010.

Thanks
Geoff

Here's a better description of the HIN and what the numbers mean. http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm. That having been said, that's what it SHOULD be. As to what it IS, only the mfr knows for sure.

And what does date "built" meant? Date started, Finished, delivered?

The most important thing is, you've got a great boat with a unique identification number (whatever it means) and you love it. Go enjoy it and don't worry about the "nits"....

Charlie

Charlie, my understanding is the build month/year portion of the registration/serial# reflect when the hull was put in the mold... The date is molded into the transom at the time the hull is laid up...
Mine being FMLT2510F809 is confirmed by Jeff as being the tenth R25 built and was laid up in the mold in 6th month of 2008 and is a 2009 model...

It was finished/delivered in August 08 to a non profit group/dealer(?)/Boys Club (strange and hazy history on that part).. Then resold in October 2008 to a private party... I purchased it from that owner in August 2009... So it basically had three owners in one year...

Dr. D, you may be right but I can't find any "regulation" that says that. Ranger probably does it, and most certainly does it if Ranger Jeff says they do!! :!: but many others may not if they are not required to... Anyway, enjoy, whatever hull number you have! May end up with a tug here when my CAT wears out... 😛

Charlie

Charlie,

You'll never wear CAT out, maybe the engine.

The more "clarification" I get, the more confused it all seems.

OK, so our R-25's (Snug Tug) serial number is:

FMLT2525C707

We bought it in June of 2007 and the "C707" part of the number means that it was made in March of 2007 and it is a 2007 model year. So far so good. It is hull number 25, which I thought meant that it was the 25th R-25 made. But one of the posts above says that in the first year the hull numbers started with "10", which would make mine (#25) actually the 16th R-25 made. (#10 is the first, #11 is the second, and so on up to #25, which is the 16th)

LEVITATION posted earlier that his hull number is "10", which must be the 10th made in the 2009 model year?? It can't be the 10th ever made since mine is already the 25th (or 16th if they started with "10") made way back in 2007.

So it looks like the hull numbers start over again every model year?? If not, why do newer tugs made in later years have lower numbers than older tugs?? Or am I still missing something here? Seems like the numbering should be more straight forward than this, or maybe I've just reached the point where counting is beyond my mental ability! Not that any of this really matters, but curious minds like to think that they can understand such things. (apparently not!)

Let me throw a wrench into the works. I was told that Ranger restarts the count on the serial numbers, and I thought they said the recount started on their fiscal year (whenever that is). I believe Mark told me Ranger only makes four R21's a quarter. But all this does not make sense because my HIN is FMLT2130C010. I placed my order in January. It went into production in March, and was delivered in April. This is soooo confusing.

Well I guess I will toss this into the frey. My number is FMLT2110A606 which should mean its laid up in Jan of 06 and in theory would be first one out of the box. It is not! I believe hull number one is in Tacoma. It has the small window in the door. I used to have the hin here for that boat as I made a offer for it before ending up with my boat. That deal went sour for several people as the seller would not let the bottom be inspected. The owner at present of that boat is a Tugnutter.
Interesting subject eh! Bob Heselberg Eatonville Wa

The plot thickens.... I believe Jeff is doing this for some evil scheme of KAOS... Where's Smart when we need him?
