Is there a protocol for cleaning the engine (inboard diesel)? I've been told you can fire it up, wash it down, and then spray it with something to keep it from developing any surface rust. Has any one done this? What products have you used?

Bobby: I clean my engine every year after servicing, along with tractors, lawn mowers and other equipment. I use Gunk Engine Degreaser, can get at any local auto parts store. I do the boat when it's on the trailer as it's easier to catch the waste. But is doable when boat is in the water, just pump bilge area in container and dispose of in accordance with local regulations ( yeah right ) !
Says on the can to clean engines and bilge in watercraft, I have engine off when cleaning, let dry and run for a little while. I do not put any thing on motor after cleaning as it just seams to make the dirt stick better but I live where there's a lot of dust and dirt when the wind blows due to the farming in the area.
