CO monitor requirements for Ranger Tugs

Subject: CO monitor requirements for Ranger Tugs

As far as I can see, all Ranger Tug models with the exception of the R-21EC are equipped by the factory with CO monitors.

I've read the USCG rules for CO monitoring and find they don't have one.

So, should the R-21EC have a CO monitor or not ?

Pretty sure you mean carbon monoxide (CO), not carbon dioxide (CO2).

BoatUS says "While guarding against the many possible sources of CO is certainly advisable, the most reliable safeguard is a CO detector. As of August 1, 1998 the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), the organization that writes the voluntary standards for recreational boats, began recommending that all boats with enclosed accommodation areas and a gasoline generator or a gasoline inboard propulsion engine have a CO detector installed.
(Diesel engines are not included because they are much less likely to produce deadly levels of CO.) The recommendation that CO detectors be installed on new boats is great news for anyone who will be buying a new boat, but what about boats built before August 1998?"

The spec sheet at the factory website shows a CO Monitor as standard equipment on the R-21EC.

My Monterey 242 Cruiser didn't come with one in the forward berth. It was one of the first mods I made to that boat right after purchase. Very similar to this one:

At $50, the added safety for me, my family and friends makes it a no brainer.
And yes, it did go off one night last year. Fumes coming in from a sailboat in a slip next to us not hooked up to shore power but running their generator for some strange reason. Glad it had it!

Sorry.... meant CO monitor and not CO2. 😉 I edited my OP.

Yes, the Factory specs for their R-21EC does indicate/state CO monitor. I will be in touch with Ranger about this as my new 2016 R-21EC does not have one.

Strong work on having that CO monitor, Albert! CO is deadly because red blood cells (they carry the oxygen) have a much much stronger affinity for CO than O2, hundreds of times more! Doesn't take much CO in the air to knock the O2 off the RBCs and they then carry just the CO! Of all the products in any combustion, CO is what kills.

When I travel, I carry my own CO detector; I set up my HEPA, CPAP, white noise, fan, 'lil nightcap, sleep like a newborn baby!
