We are purchasing a used R-29 that does not include a cockpit canvas. The boat is in excellent condition, which suggests it was likely stored in a covered slip. My concern is that the cockpit cushions may develop mold during the wet winter months here in the Pacific Northwest. While the cushions do have protective canvas covers, I’m wondering whether a dedicated cockpit canvas is necessary to keep them in good shape, or if there are additional steps I can take to better preserve the cushions.

We keep our 31 in an uncovered slip in Tacoma. I wash and waterproof my canvas covers annually. No mold over 5 years and none on our previous 27.

Thanks for this info. What products do you use to clean and waterproof.

I haven't tried any of theses products but according to Gemini (AI) ...

Recommended Products for Stubborn Stains

If a standard dish soap cleaning doesn't work, professional-grade marine cleaners are designed for this specific chemistry:

  • Sunbrella Extract: A dedicated oil-based stain remover.
  • 3M Marine Multi-Purpose Boat Soap: Tougher than dish soap but safe for canvas.
  • Star Brite Sail & Canvas Cleaner: Good for general grime and oil.

⚠️ Important: Restore Water Repellency

Cleaning with degreasers (like Dawn) or specialty cleaners will strip the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating from your canvas. Once the canvas is clean and dry, you must re-treat the area with a fabric protectant like 303 Marine Fabric Guard to ensure water continues to bead off.
