Looking for opinions on the relative merits of the cockpit fridge vs. springing some extra dough on a freezer or ice maker?

I opted for a freezer when ordering my new R29S. It was the right decision as we do extended cruising.

We’re expecting to spend the most time away from shore power. The ice maker need shore power—probably generator power would work. Check with Andrew.

We opted for the cockpit fridge. We use it as our drink cooler so we don’t need an ice chest on board.

The cockpit fridge also has a small freezer with it. Compliments the fridge/freezer well.

We have found the cockpit freezer to be very useful for our fishing and shrimping trips on our 2016 R-29S. I would definitely opt for it again.

Well, I see you are in Alaska. If you are taking long cruises and shopping for food is scarce I think I would get myself the best freezer/refrigerator combo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUjfB72lnGo Sometimes the extra cost makes a big difference.

We have an Engel in our cockpit. Low power, quiet, and works inside the port locker with limited air circulation. Love it!

We had the same question (also a January delivery!). Andrew pointed out that the ice maker doesn’t work with inverter power. We don’t plan to be on shore power often so ruled it out.

We have the icemaker but we rewired the icemaker so we could run it off the inverter while underway. Works fine. When at anchor we do turn it off if we are not using the generator too. The icemaker is a freezer to a point. Keeps milkshakes the right consistency, but is fine with meats etc.

Ethan,
I’m thinking of rewiring the ice maker as well. Can you explain how it’s done.

Thanks
Joe

Joe all that was done was taking the icemaker wires from its dedicated breaker and piggybacked on the outlet breaker which I believe is 25 amp on the house/inverter bank I did not do it myself but the electrician who did said it was not complicated. Be sure to turn off the icemaker while not underway. When anchored and not running the generator I may top off a cooler or just let it sit inside the turned off icemaker.
