Can someone give me a feel for how loud it is in a C28 when sitting in the cockpit when doing around 5mph. (No wake). Maybe comparing it to a similar outboard sized boat.

Is the diesel the classic clunky sound when at low speeds?

We have a 26 Cutwater D3 Volvo It sounds awesome if your into that old classic inboard sound. Its not loud. The 28 D4 sounds even better ( more cubic inch) ! Its definitely louder then an outboard 4 stroke but sounds good to my ears.

I have no experience with Cutwater diesel boats. We did take a ride in a Ranger Tug 21 and my wife and I both found while we liked the 'charm' of the diesel noise, we both found it too loud for us. Different engine, different boat from the Cutwater so not really a fair comparison. We did take out a RT-27 OB, at 5 mph, which is just above idle, you could hardly tell the engine was running, it was so quiet. On smooth lake waters, even at 30mph, my wife found she could have a comfortable level conversation with others in the cockpit, which is what sold her on the boat.
Everybody has a different 'feeling/thought' on what is a good noise, what is a tolerable noise level and I am afraid the only person who can answer that for you, is you. You need to get a ride on a Cutwater diesel and find out for yourself.

We have an R27 with the D3-200 which should be very similar to the C28. Unfortunately I only have data from inside the cabin with the door closed. Depending on the conditions it only takes about 1000rpm to go 5 mph. At 1000rpm I measure 52dBA inside with the windows and door closed. At 1500rpm it measures 62dBA. It is very quiet at that speed range and we can hold a very normal conversation inside or out. While not measured I would guess that the cockpit area is only about 5dBA louder than inside. It is a nice low rumble. We often have guests in the cockpit while underway and they have no problem having a pleasurable conversation in the cockpit. They often even sit in the cockpit and talk to each other at 3500rpm and 15kts though it clearly is much louder and more of a challenge. At that speed I measure 75dBA inside the cabin.

i have 28 D4. at idle/fishing trawling speed its quiet. possible not as quiet as an outboard but not intrusive. easy to talk.
when you throttle up its noisy. the sound proofing on hatch is pretty good though

It sounds like HEAVEN!!!
