Question for you experienced boaters. How would you compare cockpit noise levels in a R21-EC compared to a say a C-Dory 22 with a 115hp 4 stroke outboard? I know I'll never get the chance to compare myself, so looking for your input.

Thanks
Jake

Jake,

We had a C-Dory 22, but have the Ranger 27. Comparing them I would say that the C-Dory was louder in both configurations with the door opened and closed.

Thanks for the response. I was more interested in the cockpit noise but good to hear how the cabin compares also. I have a sterndrive now so sounds like an outboard might be quite a bit louder. Just wonder is the 21EC with the motorbox is louder than a 27 with the engine below decks at normal cruise speed.

Hello Jake,

I had a Cape Cruiser 23 with Honda outboard (which is similar to the CD22) before I bought the 21EC. At 6-7 mph, the sounds levels are equivalent. The outboard of course "cruises" at +/-20 mph, which would be noisier than the 21EC at it's "cruise" speed of 6-7.5 mph. At WOT the 21EC is noisy but no more than the outboard boat at 3/4 - FULL throttle. I've measured the sound levels in my 21EC and surprisingly, the cockpit noise db level is the SAME as the cabin, although the sound just seems a little louder inside the cabin. I can't remember the actual decibel numbers, unfortunately.

I have found the 21EC diesel sound to be hypnotic and to often induce sleepiness regardless of throttle level. It's a soothing sound...
