On our R27 the plastic piece that holds the cockpit door to the side of the cockpit seat has broken off, this is the second time so I'm wanting to replace it with something more lasting. Has anyone replaced this 2 part white plastic catch with something more durable?

Jim F

Yes. I have replaced this with a bronze 2 piece catch. It has a protruding tang that is "caught" in a receiver that has 2 stainless steel spring loaded balls that wedges the tang. It is surprisingly cheap, less than $10. and has lasted more than 2 years at this point. I bought an extra thinking it too would fail- so far so good. Requires a squirt of corrosion control once in a while to keep the spring assembly from freezing. I think it is available on internet.

Thanks for the idea. If you can the next time you're at your boat take a photo and post back, this would be very helpful for me and maybe others.

Thanks again,

Jim

Good day!

As Jim stated, your input as to the Cockpit/swim platform door catch would be greatly appreciated.

Even if you cannot get to the boat to take a picture if you could provide the name of the store and/or website where you acquired the door catch and perhaps eventually a part # or such would help.

We acquired the Ranger Tug 27' Echo from Bob and Gay Lynch at the end of May and are trying to get up to speed on things (get myself up to speed w/ the boat's various systems which are much more complicated then our former fairly simple C-Dory Venture) as well as address several very minor issues w/ the boat and this same cockpit/swim platform door catch is one of the items I am trying to address.

Thanks and take care,
Dan, Tanya, and Hannah on the Echo

Regards door latch. I put this on my improvements page as I already know how to do that and posting pictures seems to be somewhat byzantine. Try this link

Two images. As I said, requires a little shot of corrosion block or oil occasionally to keep the springs free. I have seen them at West Marine at their normal hyper retail price. They are on the internet at boat supply stores as well. The problem is what to call them. Tray "door catch" or "latch". Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting the pics. Regrettably, since this item was broken on the boat when we bought it, I had no idea what it looked like so your picture and description were very helpful.

Not sure this is exactly what you have - and I am afraid since I am not at the boat I am not sure which size it is - but this appears to be what you acquired but in stainless steel I hope (would need to confirm that) rather then brass as you mentioned.

I found these items - which are all the exactly the same except for the size and price and SKU # of course - at the website "Boatstore.com" as follows:

http://www.boatstore.com/friction-catch ... -11cm.html

http://www.boatstore.com/friction-catch ... -95cm.html

http://www.boatstore.com/friction-catch ... -79cm.html

... and then another one at the website "BoatOutfitters.com" as follows:

http://www.boatoutfitters.com/latch-hd-spring

As mentioned, the above sizes and prices vary w/ the cost a low of $3.59 to a high of $14.07 so hopefully one of these is correct for a Ranger Tug 27' or indeed any Ranger Tug cockpit/swim platform door catch.

Thanks again!

Take care,
Dan, Tanya, and Hannah on the Echo

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've just ordered the stainless catch one that Dan posted a lick to from Boat Outfitters. I think this one should hold up to the elements and be more durable then the plastic one that came standard on our R27. I'll post back on how it looks, fits and works once I've got my hands on it.

Good evening Jim,
We Met you several times on the east coast in our American tug Elan; Charleston & along the St Johns river.
I know you have ordered a latch, but if it dosn't not work out I installed the same SS latch as Fluid uses on the aft salon door, problem went away.
The latch they have been using is pretty chesey to be polite.
Enjoy the north channel & please say hello to Roy Eaton that runs the Cruisers Net out of Current Cut, what a great service he provides the cruising community!
Be safe & have fun!

Nice to hear from you Mike and Barbara. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep this in mind if what I've ordered does not work out. Do you or have you brought your Cutwater back east? maybe Florida in the winter time? I will be seeing Roy in a few weeks when we are in Little Current, he's giving a presentation about the North Channel for our Great Lakes Ranger Tug/Cutwater Rendezvous and yes he is a great guy. We still have room for one more boat!!!
