Wood like to expand our cruising area, to the Columbia River. Are there any week end gatherings planned this summer? We live in Central Washington and have-trailer-will-travel.

We live in Corvallis Or and have heArd that a trip to Astoria from Portland is not difficult. Maybe if other boaters are interested we could plan a trip this summer when the flows are lower.

We have cruised the Columbia River both upriver through the Bonneville locks to Cascade Locks and downriver to Astoria. We usually put in at Chinook Landing on the Oregon side near Troutdale. We have also put in at Cathlamet, Wa. Both have great launches and parking. The Portland to Astoria lends itself to several nice overnighters whether you want to anchor or moor. We are planning on making the Portland to Astoria trip sometime this spring so we can get hours on our engine to get it's mandatory service done before we take off the end of June or first of July to circumnavigate Vancouver Island.

Hope this information helps.

Robyn and I have been thinking of doing the same this year. On Monday, we are heading to Portland with our 5th wheel to stay a few days and scout the ramps and marinas. I know we would like to cruise with others who are knowledgable regarding the "lay of the land", so to speak.
Perhaps someone from the area would be willing to put together a "mini-cruise".
If anyone is available Tuesday or Wednesday, PM me for my cell phone number.

Just spent two nights at the Elochoman Marina in Cathlamet, and highly recommend it. Lots to see/explore in that region...would love to be part of discussions for a Columbia River trip...have long wanted to do the Portland-to-Astoria trip...

We do most of our cruising between Hayden Island and St Helens. We have been upstream a few times and went down to Cathlamet once -- a thoroughly delightful place. We are willing to help organize "docktails" and dinner at some central place during late spring or early summer. We are thinking about boats arriving Saturday morning, some sort of activity Saturday afternoon, supper Saturday evening and departure after breakfast on Sunday. Is this of any interest?

Hey, Lenny and Louise,
Good to hear from you! Sounds like a good idea. Our intentions would be launching at Chinook Landing, first night possibly at Government Island, then on to St. Helens (Coon Island), off to Cathlamet, then to Astoria. The return trip would be the same in reverse. Of course there is always room for modifications. We are looking at March or April in order to get hours on the engine for the mandatory service before June. Always open for input from others wanting to make this trip. Lenny, do you have water under your keel yet? Are you still planning on a trip upriver through the Bonneville locks?

I have the last week in March off and would be willing to entertain a nice run to Astoria or Warrenton...or Ilwaco.

The last week of March sounds good for us. How about the rest of you out there?

That might work for us as well. We would need to research trailer & truck storage where we put in. We will try to keep in touch as interest progresses.

We went from our moorage in Portland this weekend to st helens and had a nice cruise. Saw Lenny and Louise cruising as well 🙂 St. Helens is installing new power and water on the public dock for each boat moored. A nice upgrade when it's all connected and working (call first). We went back through the channel past coon island - a favorite spot.

We did Astoria last year. It was a nice cruise though we personally enjoy going up river and beacon rock. One of the most beautiful spots I've seen on the river.

Please keep us posted and we may jump in for a portion.

Robyn is feeling pretty ill with a respiratory infection, so we decided to not meet up with any of the local boaters. We did, however, check out both Chinook Landing and the Port of Camas-Washougal. They are both well sheltered from river current and have room to maneuver with the truck and trailer.
Since we will be coming from the north, we will probably launch from the latter.

Any one up for a cruise to Multnomah Chanel Yacht Club for their St Paddy's Weekend bash March 14, 15, 16. I think the moorage is free for Friday and Saturday night. Great food, Great people, Great fun. No shortage of alcohol.

I don't have time to plan it but someone else is welcome to.

Hello potential Columbia cruisers,
Cruising to Astoria is great. I've done it many times over the last 28 years, including winter cruises. The biggest concern I would see for out-of-the-Portland-area cruisers is where to store your vehicle and trailer. The ramp at 42nd street and Marine Drive in Portland is new and spacious, plenty of security during the day beacause the sheriffs' office is there, but I'd be nervous about leaving a vehicle there overnight. It costs $5/day. I don't know about Chinook Landing farther east. I think the cost would be the same at Chinook Landing. There may be moorages in Multnomah Channel where you could leave your truck and trailer.

I talked to the manager of Pacific Power Boats where I store my trailer. It's about 1/3 mile from the ramp at 42nd and Marine Dr. He said they might be able to do some short-term storage at--Don't Quote Me on This... about $40 week, if they have room. It is very secure, but you could only retrieve your rig during business hours.. if they could accommodate you. I would guess they might have to separate your trailer from your truck to make best use of space. They get busy with salmon season at the end of March Might be worth a call..the manager's name is Jon Spassov. (503-288-9350)

People are welcome to store their truck and trailer at my house. I think we have room for 6 to 8 trucks and trailers. We are just a few minutes from the Vancouver Marine park Ramp. http://www.cityofvancouver.us/parksrec/page/marine-park
The ramp is free as long as you don't park there (and I would not leave a vehicle there). Our house is gated and secure.

A very generous offer, thanks. We will probably put in on the Oregon side however. Does anyone know if there a sling launch along the river on the Oregon side? After the ease of putting in at Anacortes I am spoiled.

We are RVing in Yuma right now, but would love to be part of an Astoria cruise. We expect to be home at the end of March. We live in Kalama, WA and keep our R25SC at the marina there. For anyone interested, and whether we are part of the cruise or not, the Port of Kalama has a beautiful launch facility, and it's free. Plus plenty of parking....except when the salmon run is on. Timing is everything.

Do we have firm dates for a cruise from Portland to Astoria?
David, we'll probably take you up on your offer of parking for our truck and trailer. Will you be able to join us on a cruise?
Joe

When I said I could do the last week in March, that means the last full week in March -- 22 through the 28. Spring classes where I teach begin March 30.

Sorry, guys and gals. Our plans have changed, so we will be unable to cruise the Columbia this spring. Perhaps later this year. If so, I'll begin a new thread.
