Command bridge steering/control child lockout ?

Subject: Command bridge steering/control child lockout ?

For RTs with the Command Bridge steering is there a steering/control child lockout to secure against unwanted interference for the main cabin steering controls ?

Unsure about the command bridge! But a stick workers for me with cockpit steering control!
Usually only a few well placed whacks works for me, but need to be repealed every few days,
But my grandkids are slow learners, hop this helps. Bob

Hi Baz, The Volvo Penta has a lockout so only one control binnacle is active. Now if the kids went up top and started turning the wheel constantly in one direction you would have a steering problem.

Just make it a rule that no kids are allowed on the bridge without an adult present to supervise them.

Hi Baz, For boats that have multiple steering locations steering wheels will counter each other. What I mean by this is if someone can is on the bridge and constantly turn the wheel to the left while the person below constantly turns to the right, the two steering stations will counter each other and I believe the rudder will not move. As the wheels will continuously turn in the opposite directions.

This is actually how we purged the the air from the hydraulic lines on my 31 CB.

What the heck are little kids doing on the flying bridge un-supervised, especially when underway?
If they're old enough to be up there alone they're old enough to know better.

Otherwise figure out a way to prevent them climbing up there without supervision, canvas ladder cover? or child-proof gate?

Hello Barry,

If the throttle and shift controls are in gear, they have a lockout where someone couldn't take over unless the control was in neutral. There is a station select button which allows you to do this.

As for the steering, someone else posted that you could counter the steering if more than one wheel was being turned at a time. Agree that a child should not be on the bridge without supervision.

My grandkids are well behaved 😀 .... I was just curious about the 'security' of the upper deck's controls.

During my recent Alaska/Kodiak Island voyage on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry my grandson and granddaughter were given the opportunity to steer the ferry boat and before doing this the Captain on the bridge had a few words to the engine room crew about this --- so grandson and grandaughter now have a taste for this and asked all sorts of questions concerning who has control between the bridge and the engine room. Touring the engine room later my grandkids were given the answers. :lol:
