Coolant Circulation Pump

My 2007 R25 w/ 110 Yanmar has a Johnson electric coolant circulation pump that runs as soon as the key is turned on. I assume its purpose is to ensure a sufficient flow of coolant to the "bus heater" located under the helm station.

Will there be a sufficient flow of coolant at cruising speed to support the hot water heater without this pump running? If "yes", I'll install a relay on the "bus heater" circuit so that the circulation pump only runs when needed.

My experience, the pump must be running for the water heater to make hot water from engine heat.

No, you'll need to run the pump to get enough flow to the water heater while underway.

Kenny, I don't get much if any heat from the helm heater. Is the pump automatic? I don't find a switch/ breaker etc. for the pump.

Hello Phil,

The R-27 doesn't have a pump.

I'm guessing your fan turns on but your're not getting heat, is that correct? If so I would check your coolant level at the engine. Make sure you check at the engine and not the over flow bottle. If you have further questions please email me at kennymarrs@rangertugs.com

Thanks Kenny, The coolant level is where it should be at the engine and at the expansion tank and I still don't get much heat. I'll take another look in the spring.

Hi Phil,
Not getting heat from the helm heater is definitely odd. I even get a slight heat flow permeating out even when the blower is off. Perhaps you have a clog somewhere. I think the water heater and the helm heater are in the same loop so when using the engine for hot water is that getting hot? I would think if they are in the same loop and there is a clog or restriction you would be having a hot water issue when using the engine to heat it.

If I can hijack this thread I have a question.

Has anyone ever heard of an inline heater and pump that will warm the coolant enough to run the engine coolant heater on a 21? This could be something similar to a block heater that would be in a radiator hose. The heater could run on 110 AC and a relay could be hooked to the fan switch to run the 12V DC pump.

If anyone has any thoughts about this idea I am all ears (or eyes as this is on a computer screen).
