I have a 2017 ranger are 31 CB with the 6D 300 hp engine. I got a warning light for low coolant light that came on and then went off. I’ve never topped this off before. I noticed it could use just a little bit so maybe that’s why I got the warning pop up. On the engine it says only Volvo Yellow coolant VCS. When I go sure today I’m not sure I’ll be able to get Boba brand coolant. Is it OK to use a generic brand As long as it is VCS?
Thanks much, Bobby.

hi Bobby,

I doubt that I will be the last word on this but I would be very careful of using anything other than genuine Volvo VCS coolant. My understanding from the Volvo Tech at the last Ranger tug get together was that this is different staff to anything else and that mixing can give you real problems. You may end up creating a gel in the cooling system and having to have the whole thing flushed out. Do you have the manual for your engine and if so, what does it say?

I'm sure that there is a Volvo Penta dealer not too far from you in Baltimore who you can call and get confirmation [or otherwise] of my opinion. You may also find that a Volvo car dealership may stop this stuff as well as I'm fairly sure they use it in vehicles. Volvo VCS comes either pre-mix [I always have a 5 L jug on board] or concentrate.

I just want you to confirm with real Volvo people before you make a potential mistake.

Good luck

The low coolant sensor is very touchy with our engines. Just a hair under the line and it will trip. You definitely want to stick with the yellow cap Volvo coolant.

Hi Bobby,

As already stated, best to stick with the Volvo coolant. And yes, the sensor is on a hair trigger, but once you top it off, you'll be good again.

Cheers,

Ralf
