I am sorry to hear this, I hope that you are going to be able to use your generator soon.
Is there a law that protect the customer in your State against wear done over a period of time while the warranty was valid? You might want to look this up, you never know... In my Province, there is a customer protection office that will fight these type of things on our behalf and the have the legal staff on hand to do it.
I must say that your mechanic should have seen this much earlier, as he was doing the maintenance of the generator, the belt is orange, if that is not a good indicator... The electrical connectors will need to be cleaned or replaced for sure.
I do not know about your knowledge about mechanic in general, but I would suggest that you look at every corner in your boat to see everything that does not look normal to you and report it to your mechanic next time that the boat is due for maintenance. I did this last year, I had a list with about 20 items for them, that needed to be looked at to reassure me, about 15 were legitimate! hopefully your problem will be resolved soon!
