This was inspired by a post today about engine oil analysis. If you have an engine with a lot of hours with no major work done on it (Valve grinding, bearings, rings, etc.) speak up! Who's got the record? Diesel engines in non marine applications can go 20,000 hours, but that would be a lot of miles in a boat.

It depends heavily on YOU.

How well you maintain it.

How hard do you push it. One run generally at displacement speeds vs. a high percentage of WOT.

Its like asking "how long is a string." It all depends.

Personal opinion, but in my book you will be a hero if you get 20k hours out of a Volvo.

Old Detroits ... yeah.

Volvos run at high RPM. They are light mass relative to HP and RPM. All of which makes them less durable than some.

That's not a knock on them. The light mass (weight) and compact size for the HP makes them a good choice on the Fluid boats that try to pack a lot into a small boat. And so many buyers have speed as a big deal criteria. Those attributes are exactly what Volvos are designed to fulfill.

Tradeoffs.
