My wife and I have made an offer on a Cutwater on the Great Lakes-freshwater-anything we should be aware of .The boat is being surveyed by the owner, we are using a broker, it may come with a trailer. Boat is a one owner. She has the volvo penta with a display (?) that does not work-owner says that he gets the necessary info from the garmin display-we want that repaired.
The boat will be used on the Great Lakes primarily, We are coming from 30 years of sailing!
thoughts?

Whenever I buy a boat, or a house, I always obtain my own inspection. It is a small price to pay for a very large investment. Your serveyor should know what things to look out for and should be your point of contact for questions regarding the condition of the boat.

Much Thanks, the owner is having it surveyed now and I know it is proprietary..
The broker is submitting our offer today, will let you know,

Not sure why you wouldn't have the inspection done, rather than the owner. Regarding the Volvo display - we only use ours for readings on hours and rpm (which align with the Garmin plotter). for fuel reading we manualluy enter data on our chartplotter as the Volvo readings are very misleading and nor reliable. GOOD LUCK!

UPDATE:
Lots has been going on in the background!
We have hired our own surveyor who is going to do the boat and fuel analysis survey.
We have our survey date and sea trial date if everything goes well. Also we have names of storage facility for the winter.
If all goes well we intend to drive her back to Lake Erie in the spring taking our time with family.
Our Broker so Far has been outstanding and very helpful.
We will add him to our social media postings if all goes well as we feel it should.
The current owner is being very nice and helpful.
We look forward to finally seeing the boat and go through it!
We will keep you updated on our journey.
W do not intend to do the loop, we have been to trawlerfest and are familiar with AGLCA, Not us.

Before I purchased my Ranger 31cb…
I made an offer on a boat down in FL - I inspected it myself - brought my experienced Grand Banks owner pal with me - he approved - and he is very mechanical. Everything worked, the trial went well. Fell in love.
I went back to CT and lined up a boat surveyor - a routine event I reckoned.

I was new to boating so my Grand Banks pal and I flew down to Florida with the idea of watching the surveyor do his thing, and after the surveyor left, I would wire the money to the Seller and we would cruise the boat from Bradenton FL (West coast) back to CT.

My pal would teach me the ropes of a 32 foot long boat - the only thing I knew was I was barred from using the terms “toilet”, “left” and “right” during the cruise.

Met the surveyor - a man of few words… he was doing his thing and I was busy figuring out where to store stuff and making a provisions list.

After 20 minutes the Surveyor called for me to meet him in the cabin to review the engine. Actually to review UNDER the engine.

He said “I would not take this boat out of the harbor, I am stopping work, I’ll charge you 60% of the cost of the survey”. To my astonishment the entire bottom of the engine + mounts was incredibly corroded. The tops of bolts were missing — I was crushed.

I walked from the deal. Pal and I flew to S Carolina and cruised on my pal’s boat back home and he taught me the ropes… and a few months later I bought the Ranger Tug 31cb.

Moral — control the survey !!!
And watch the surveyor’s every move. Best $$$ you will ever spend.

Have fun in the process.
