We are just moving our stuff into our new Cutwater. We are used to a much bigger boat, with lots of drawers and cabinets. The most obvious problem has to do with items like silverware and knives. There are four cabinets, but absolutely no drawers. Does anyone have an easy solution to where to put small items that like to be stored horizontally? Have you found an insert for one of the cabinets that might make a drawer or two?

How about trash? I can't see an obvious place that does not impinge on the living space.

Any suggestions/solutions will be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Steve

Same on the tugs.
Some have added drawer slides and drawers.
Others (the slothful like me) have simply bought plastic storage trays with lids for the various items which are then stacked in the cabinets.
Perhaps someone can remember which boat in our owner's albums has the pictures of their extensive retrofit of drawers, etc.

Trash - well I (Mr. Sloth) simply hang a plastic shopping bag by one handle over the top corner of the cabinet door between the sink and the stove because it is recessed from the companionway - and close the door trapping the bag handle. That way I don't dislodge the bag when staggering down the companionway looking for something that I have already forgotten what it was I had set out to fetch.

Steve, You might want to attend a couple of rendezvous. They always have a boat crawl where you get to meet the other boaters and see what they have done to their boats. Very informative.

Any ideas for where to put rubbish bin on a C30? Perhaps in the cockpit?

Mr Sloth,
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo funny!
Sounds toooooooooooooooooooo familiar !!!

For silverware I do the Denny-o trick, just plastic tray with a lid. I plan on doing a custom tray for them one day. We also found a neet little bamboo tray that justs hangs over the dining table magazine rack. Think we got that at Pier-1 imports.

We have a 2011 C28. Trash: Got a wicker container lined w/plastic bag that we put just inside the lower "stateroom" on the carpeted step below the battery panel. Recyclables: We use the cockpit floor level compartment aft of the aft helm. Silverware: A small compartmented wood box with a handle (Bed, Bath and Beyond) stored under the sink-it comes out for meals. We don't have a wine cooler under the helm seat so that's where all the alcohol/cleaning products go. In the vee-berth under sink is extra water, canned goods, etc. Of course, we moved up from no boat, so it's pretty roomy for us!

Just bought a 2 year old 26 ft Cutwater and the former owner used one cabinet and converted it to a bank of 4 drawers for: top drawer has silverware (divided drawer for forks, spoons and knives), 2nd drawer was for uitentils, 3rd for larger kitchen items and bottom drawer has potholder or other soft kitchen items. This owner did the work himself and it is done beautifully and very organized.
Trash: I found a very small (8 gal) plastic trash and modified the lower left cabinet (on 26 model) to be able to pull it out without disturbing other items next to it.

Must add that we are former sailors (20 years) and have owned 4 sailboats and one trawler. We didn't have to modify our former 34 American Tug much to accommodate our cruising lifestyle and are adding some ideas from that boat. Still, was very impressed that a 26ft boat had the storage it has and one change is we are adding 2 half-shelves in the galley cabinets at this time. Plus a knife rack behind the propane stove. Counter top has a slit cut into it with a wooden rectangle bezel around the top of the slit to accommodate 4 knives. Good utilization of space for kitchen items used often.
