Have seen some YouTube on replacing zinc on D4-260 engine …is this the same on D4 300I ? If so how often and where … did not see this mentioned in 200 hr service or manual? Just finished my inaugural oil/ fuel and air filters changes on 2018 29RTCB D4-300 and next gen UMC-1 3.5( and changed pencil zinc on generator with only 68 hrs on it)

You’ve probably heard that newer D4-300 do not have pencil zincs…, mine is a 2014 and it does. You might not have them but if you do:

There’s one toward the front of the engine on the water pump. It faces forward and when you remove it, dumps water right on the belt and pulleys. I recommend diverting the water to go straight to the bilge. I use a plastic cutting board for this. The rear one is on the back of the heat exchanger and nicely aimed down. Both are easy to find with a mirror. Just feel around for a brass/bronze square headed bolt fitting.

One thing I learned that makes the job quicker with less water intrusion is to purchase a 3rd plug/zinc holder and have it preloaded with a new zinc, so right when you pull the old one you can insert the new one. BoatZincs.com sells the plug/holders for the D4. 300.

I was told by my Volvo tech last month (during winter service) that Volvo is saying that even on the older D4-300I's that you do not need to replace the zincs. Apparently they are recommending not to since they don't add value to the entire system with the other zincs on the boat. I'm not sure if this is actually true, or if they are blowing smoke. Would love to hear what others think/have heard.

Haifisch and calcman05 thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. I ‘ll plan a quick look see on my D4 to see if it has the plugs.
Nice tip on the quick ‘ loaded ‘ plug replacement!

The earlier D4-300 engines had two zincs as described above by Haifisch. Somewhere around 2017 the engine had only one zinc. And then they went to no zincs as the metal end caps were switched to plastic. A call to Pacific Power Group with your engine serial number and they can tell you how many (if any) zincs are on your engine. You may find the engine manufacture date may be a year earlier than your boat manufacturing date.
