My depth gauge went from working fine to solid dashes when I backed off a mooring. I have a 2017 R27.

Try a reset, remove all cables to the box mounted behind the helm and then plug back in. Also check your settings on the Sonar. Or it could be the transducer lost fluid. Do the reset first. Some tugs had the transducer glued directly to the hull. If that is the case it may have released. You should reinstall with the cup that holds antifreeze and reinstall it that way. There is a thread on this topic by Gansett Ranger.

Ranger/Cutwater occasionally forgets to install the o-ring that seals the cover. If the o-ring is not installed the Depth gauge will work fine until the propylene glycol leaks out to a level to give erratic readings. The cover is a twist lock. Remove the cover and inspect for an o-ring. If o-ring is not present order an o-ring from Ranger and top off reservoir with RV antifreeze.

Thanks for your help. Could you tell me how to access the depth gauge on a 2017 R27?

I'm not sure about the RT, but on my C28 it's right underneath the floor board at the bottom of the step into the v-berth.

The depth gauge on my 2017 R-31 CB did not appear to be working this spring. I checked the transducer and topped up its fluid, which was only slightly below capacity. I turned off all power and then rebooted my electronics. Nothing helped. Then I called our friends at Ranger Tugs, which I should have done in the first place.

They told me that other RT and CW owners were having difficulty getting a readout from their depth gauges after installing the latest Garmin software. The fix after booting up the Garmin system is to open the sonar functions before opening chart functions. This worked like magic for me, although I have to do it each time I boot up the system now.

This seems to be a glitch in one of the Garmin updates published during the winter. Fluid Motion has talked to Garmin about it, but as yet I haven’t seen an acknowledgement by Garmin or any comments about it on Tugnuts. Hopefully this glitch will be fixed soon. But if you are having problems getting a reading from your depth gauge to show on your Chartplotter in chart mode, I suggest you close the chart mode, open the sonar mode until you see a depth reading, and then go back to the chart mode and look for a depth reading. Hopefully, this will solve your problem.

I had a different experience with an update on a garmin product, search for garmin oddity a few days ago. In light of this report I suspect garmin must have some qa issues. Considering that owners may need to rely on data produced by this equipment to some degree, even if garmin makes one agree to not rely on the equipment, it would be sad to see a great product loose quality so sudden.

What # update is giving issues? We updated last winter with a new update which included Active Captain and experienced no issues ( I think it was released in February ). The SD card that the update was loaded on remains in the unit. All other updates are done thru Active Captain app Via the mobil devise internet connection and the WiFi connection of the Garmin 7612. There is an update that just came available. Is this the update that is causing issues? I don't want to update and then have issues.

Not intending to hijack this thread, but my update involved v11 and then consequently 11.20 which changed the behavior of how gps coordinates are transmitted on n2k. Please read the thread about Garmin oddity from a few days ago

Hello... reviving a thread, hoping for insights on a 2020 R29CB.
On Volvo Penta dasbboard display: When I select DEPTH as one of my customized gauges on MY VIEW, it allows me to select DEPTH but it will not display any data in that gauge. The reading is always dashed lines. It is either not reading or not displaying the depth. This occurs regardless of my actual depth in water. It used to work, does not now. Have not done any updates to Garmin since taking possession in March 2021, this depth gauge used to work before June 2021. Thanks!
