Desolation sound 2012

I think that Patrick may have a complete list. Of course I could be wrong as I often am. 😉

Patrick, we are planning on going again this year on Carpe Diem. We may be coming from Campbell River where we will have our boat for July, August and Sept. For those who are coming from out of the area, we do have a covered slip in Anacortes at Anacortes Marina and can sublet that slip out over the summer. Free and secure parking, close to shops, grocery store and restaurants. Look forward to seeing everybody! Jim

Can't wait. Change Stout to Rocinante and add 4 feet please. We are now a 29. Fergus and Allan. And Yvonne.

I think the R27 Amy Marie will be breaking off from a cruise with us (a C-Dory Get Together in Comox) to join you in Desolation Sound.

This morning I sent out an email to everyone for whom I had an email address......if you think you should be on the list and you did not receive my email, I either do not have your email address or I could not read your writing on the sign up sheets!!!!

The following are the people and or boats I have on the list. If you are not on the list please either post here with your name, email, boat name and model or PM us. Alternatively you can email me at gbeattie@saltspring.com.

If there is a star by your information it means I am missing part of your info. What I need is your name(s), boat name, email address and the model of your boat so we know how much dock space you need!! Again you can post here, PM us or email me!!

I apologize for any errors, duplications or omissions in this list. I compiled it from three different sign up sheets, the info here on Tugnuts and info I had on file from last year's trip and Ranger Tugfest in Bremerton last September.....

If your plans have changed, please let us know. We always have room for more, so if you haven't signed up yet - it is not too late!! We are really looking forward to this trip and hope you are too!!

Hi Patrick and Gail. Thanks for all of your efforts with this year's cruise. It looks like our group will be even larger than last year which is great. We are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. Our new R31 will be named Sand Dollar II.

See you in July if not before

Cheers

Kathy and Keith

Kathy and Keith,
I think cocktail hour is on the Sand Dollar II, you're the only ones with enough seating. Dibs on the stern seat.

...and I'll take the upper deck

Patrick-Count "Dauntless" in on the Desolation Sound gathering on Salt Spring arriving Friday, July 27 for the four days. Sorry we'll miss the cruise up north--couldn't wedge it in between family visits on Orcas.

Bob, stern seat is yours on Sand Dollar II, bring on the Margaritas 😀

You might want to consider either La Conner or Washington Park in Anacortes. Both Anacortes and La Conner have sling lifts but La Conner is less expensive for both launch and parking and I think their parking lot is nicer, however Anacortes is closer to the San Juans. Washington park has a launch ramp and is even closer to the San Juans. We like to go to Washington Park but you cannot launch a low tide or pull out at low tide.
If you do go to Anacortes there is a good place to top off your tanks at the indian reservation 3 or four miles before town. Use the pumps on the far east side and you can drive around the building when you are done.
Happy Cruising,
Dorman

So what's best location one should stop at for going through Canadian customs process ? FYI... I'll be heading to Ganges from La Conner.

I searched this out on the web...

Bedwell Harbor (S. Pender Island) 5/1 - 8/30 9am - 8 pm; 9/1-30, 9am - 5pm.

Open May through September.

Definitely Bedwell, the alternative is Sidney which is quite a bit out of your way. Bedwell is where we cleared last year!!

We will be posting and emailing more specific information as the time grows nearer!

Thanks Gail/Patrick: Yea... I thought Bedwell was best... just wanted confirmation. 🙂

Does Ganges have a custom's dock?

Ray

No customs at Ganges. Bedwell harbor on pender island is the nearest customs. I will be posting the customs info for the trip along with other info soon.

Thanks pat

For those of you who don't have one and travel across borders frequently, I recommend a NEXUS card. These are available to Canadians and Americans under the Trusted Traveler Program and are also useful at many airports. The cards allow you to call in to an 800 number from the boat (the US does not require you to go to a port to check in and Canada does but only sometimes, very inconsistent). The cards are good for 5 years and Yvonne and I bypass all of the lines at Sea-Tac and other airports and just go to a kiosk to "check in." When driving, there are special lanes between the US and Canada that let you get through in 2 minutes instead of 2 hours. The cards cost $50 and require forms and a personal interview. Great for boating.

See: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/trust ... exus_prog/ for more details and email me with any questions.

Allan: THANKS... 🙂 That was useful info about boaters being able to call-in to an 800 number and have the actual port docking requirement waived... shame that Canadian customs doesn't always allow this though.

Here's our tentative trip itinerary... with Lee Shobe with his new R-31 indicating he's coming alongside as well (need to firm this up with Lee after speaking with him the other day when our R25 was in yard for new bottom paint).

1) Wed July 25th Leave Edmonds Marina at 10am for La Conner and stay there for the night. Distance approx 46 miles.

2) Thursday Leave La Conner at 9am and make way up to Bedwell to clear Canadian customs. Then continue onto Ganges. Distance approx 58 miles.

3) Stay/explore Ganges Marina on Salt Spring Island for Thu/Fri/Sat nights. Group BBQ on Sat night.

4) Sunday July 29 start the Desolation Sound 2012 and cruise over to Pender Harbour (PilotHouse Marina) with group.

5) Monday July 30th cruise up to Gorge Harbour with group. BBQ Monday night.

6) Explore Desolation Sound for several days before returning back to Edmonds.
