With the Desolation Sound Cruise 2013 only 4 months away how many boats do we have signed up?

Jim

At the Points North Seminar I recall hearing there were 60 boats signed up... It will be interesting to see how we manage to avoid each others wake... The RADAR reflection for all these boats will be interesting to see also. 🙂

Hi Pat

Scottfree is in! Please add us to the list from Ganges onward. We are at Canoe Cove only a couple of hours away.

See everyone there!

Leon,
You need to change your moniker to "Gotatug"!

Hope you are enjoying her!

We have 56 Tugs currently signed up plus there are some 16 boats on the Cutwater list (we will be hooking up with them in Gorge Harbour).

We need to cap off registration now, but there are always changes going forward. If you would like to be put on a waiting list, please email me at gbeattie@saltspring.com.

I will be sending out an email today to the boats I have on the list. When you receive your email, please respond so that I know I have the correct email. If you do not receive an email from me today and you think you should be on the list, please send an email to gbeattie@saltspring.com with Desolation 2013 in the subject line and your full name(s) boat name and size in the body of the email.

Thanks for your help!!

Gail

We are excited for the 2013 Desolation Sound Cruise! As you can imagine it takes quite a bit of planning to put this all together. Pat and Gail (That's It) have done a great job of organizing this years event. Pat and Gail emailed me the complete list of boats that are signed up for the Desolation Sound Cruise. I will be emailing each of you this next week to confirm your participation. The registration for Desolation Sound is closed however we do have a waiting list. Please send me an email if you have signed up for the cruise and are now unable to participate. This will allow us to get the folks off the waiting list and onto the cruise. If you would like to be added to the waiting list then please send me an email and I will add you to the list. jeffmessmer@rangertugs.com

Looking forward to a fun summer of cruising!

Jeff

Departing on Thursday August 1st. If you would like to stay at Gorge Harbour beyond August 1st then please contact Gorge Harbour directly at (250) 935-6433. Gorge Harbour is the gateway to Desolation Sound. If you prefer to stay at a dock rather than anchoring out this is a great place to return to each night after a day of exploring Desolation Sound and the surrounding area.

We will have a captains briefing each evening at 5:00 P.M.. During the captains briefing we will cover our plans for the following morning including route, tides/currents, departure time, and departure and arrival procedures.

Events
Friday July 26th All of our American friends will clear customs and make their way to Ganges. ( if you can’t make it until Saturday that is fine, but most will want to arrive Friday in order to take in the world famous Saturday Market in Ganges.) The Canadian contingent will not need to clear customs!! 5:00 P.M. Cocktail hour and appetizers on the dock. Bring your favorite appetizer. Welcome packets will be distributed.

Saturday July 27th. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the market and the town of Ganges. Thrifty Foods grocery store, and the Local Liquor Store are within easy walking distance of the Marina and both businesses will deliver directly to your boat. Fuel is available at Ganges Marina, and Mouat’s Hardware is the go to place for anything else you might have forgotten. During the day: World famous farmers market. 5:00 P.M. Captains briefing on the dock followed by cocktail hour and appetizers. Bring your favorite appetizer!

Sunday July 28th We will make our way leisurely to Nanaimo, where we will stay at the Port of Nanaimo Boat Basin (we were there last year). Our trip will be timed to get all boats safely through Dodd Narrows at 0 current . Port Boat House will host a barbecue on the rooftop deck above the marina office (where we were last year). Fuel is available here as well, as well as stores nearby for any provisions you may have forgotten in Ganges!!! 5:00 P.M Captains briefing on the roof top deck above the Nanaimo Port Authority immediately followed by cocktail hour. Dinner 6:00 P.M. Bar-B-que Salmon, chicken and dessert provided by Port Boathouse. Please bring a side dish!

Monday July 29th Captains briefing 5:00 P.M on the dock followed by cocktail hour and appetizers. Bring your favorite appetizer!

Tuesday July 30th Reservations have been tentatively made for two nights but some boats may be ready to head out on Wednesday to begin exploring beautiful Desolation Sound. Others may choose to spend one or more additional nights enjoying the luxurious setting of Gorge Harbour with its store, restaurant, pool and more. On Tuesday night we will be treated to another barbecue hosted by Volvo Penta. You are requested to bring your favourite salad to share, as the meat will be provided. 5:00 P.M. Appetizers, 6:00 P.M. Dinner

By the time we reach Gorge Harbour, we hope that all of you will have had plenty of opportunities to network with the other boat owners and that groups of like minded boaters will organically form to head out to explore Desolation Sound. Some of us who have been there before will be happy to tell you about our favourite spots and the guide books are full of spots that we have not yet had time explore. We will also have an idea by then of when various folks are planning to head for home, and hopefully you can find a few boats to convoy with, if you so desire. If you have a specific date by which you must return, you may wish to post on Tugnuts to see if anyone else has a similar schedule.

If you plan to join us only for part of this itinerary please also email receptionist@rangertugs.com with the marinas at which you will be joining us. IF YOU ARE ON THE LIST BUT NOW DO NOT PLAN TO COME or IF YOUR PLANS CHANGE AT ANY DATE IN THE FUTURE, please let us know as soon as possible as we have boats already on a wait list.

Hi, I'm Bill of the Blue Merle's wife. Love the R-27 boat, but I am cooking and packing challenged. We are planning our Desolation Sound cruise and I wonder if any of you have any packing and/or provisioning lists you'd like to share? I have never been on a cruise longer than a week and could use some help from those of you who do it frequently. I tend to overpack and under provision! Boat-friendly recipes and appetizer ideas are also greatly appreciated!

Yours in boat and marital harmony,

Nicole Parks

Good question Nicole.

Although I'm used to provisioning for long trips, I'm not familiar with this territory and where stores or markets will be available to shop during the cruise. I would be grateful for any information of this nature shared by boaters who have done past cruises to Desolation Sound. Once I get some info, I'll be able to plan better and decide what to pack.

Really excited for the cruise to begin, can't wait to lock up the house, jump in the truck and head west. See you all soon!

Lisa, I enjoy your blog posts and beautiful pictures! It looks like you are a foodie too. I'm very much looking forward to meeting you and Jim and learning from some pros about their adventures. If you have any tips to pass along, I would love hearing them, since you have made quite a success from living your passion! That goes for all of you who spend a lot of time on the water. I think it's the best way to live! Nicole Parks, Blue Merle, Woodstock, GA

We plan to trailer Santolina to Anacortes on July 24 or 25 and would love to accompany a group of Ranger tugs to Ganges Marina. How many Rangers are planning from departing from Anacortes? Is it a 1-day trip to Ganges, or should we allow for 2?

Not having launched at Anacortes before we would appreciate any advice regarding reservations. Presumably, we need to pre-arrange a lift time and a slip reservation. Are there any security concerns about leaving a truck and trailer at the marina? Which marina is the preferred choice?

Wow, next month!

Kathy and Gregg Dohrer
Santolina, R-25SC

Kathy and Gregg:

I called Cap Sante Marina (360-293-0694) just this week and ask about reservations and they said they would have plenty of room and to call a couple of days ahead of our arrival date. You could also ask them about scheduling a lift of your boat. I think this is the preferred marina, maybe others will advise.

I also learned that I can park my truck in the City owned gravel lot adjacent to the marina at no charge but not the trailer. We've left our truck here for a month before with no issues. We made arrangements to store our trailer down the street at North Harbor Diesel (360-299-1907) for $50 per month. Ask for Diana.

You could probably make it to Ganges in a day however I think it better to allow two or even three days because of potential weather delays and if you can do it in one great. Besides there is so much so see in between.

Blue Merle will be arriving in Anacortes on Sunday July 21 and we're planning to leave on 24th or 25th to make it to S Pender and Ganges to join the group.

Would also like to join up with any other Tugs for the trip.

Bill
