Desolation Sound Cruise 2013

Hello Patrick: Realized I forgot to register for the Desolation Sound Cruise!

Hope its not too late.

We will be there for the nights in Ganges, and the one in Nanimo - then we will be off on our own.

Regards,

Frank & Dawn-Marie Plumptre
"Blue Horizons" Ranger 31

We wanted to introduce ourselves to the group. We took delivery of our R25SC, Saratoga Smile in June. We are excited to join the group to Desolation Sound. We are not able to leave for Ganges until Saturday, July 27. We plan to leave Cap Sante early that morning and hope to arrive in Ganges by mid day. I am assuming we will be stragglers. Just checking to see if any others are in the same situation and would like to hook up with us? Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi:

This Fred and Bernie Day, DayDreamer III - R29 and we are planning to check in at customs at Poets Cove, BC on July 25th around noon and stay at Poet's Cove the night of July 25th. We will cruise to Ganges the morning of the July 26th and welcome anyone else that wants to cruise up to Ganges with us.

Our home port is Roche Harbor, so we have a short 45 min. cruise to Poet's Cove.

Safe boating,

Fred and Bernie Day

We are in the final countdown for the 2013 Desolation Sound Cruise!

Matt with Bellingham Yacht Sales and Mark Mansfield with Cutwater Boats are headed to Roche Harbor with a group of around 15 Cutwater Boats. They will be arriving in Roche on Friday July 26th and departing to Nanaimo on Sunday July 28th where we will all meet up. Roche Harbor Marina monitors channel 78A. Once you enter the Harbor hail "Roche Harbor Marina" on 78A. Let them know that you are part of the Cutwater group and identify yourselves by your boat name.

Andrew Custis, Kenny Marrs and Jeff Messmer are all headed to Ganges Marina along with Mike Hudson from Port Boathouse. http://gangesmarina.com/gangesmarinaindex.html Boats will be arriving on Friday July 26th and Saturday July 27th. If you plan on arriving to Ganges before Friday July 26th then be sure to let us know by sending an email to receptionist@rangertugs.com with your itinerary.

Patrick Beattie has once again graciously offered to be the dockmaster for our arrival on the 26th and 27th. Patrick lives on Saltspring Island and is very familiar with the marina. Once you enter Ganges Harbour you will see the sailing club on your port side, continue past the sailing club to the head of the Harbour. Once you pass the sailing club hail “Ranger Tug Armada” and the name of your vessel on VHF channel 72. Patrick will respond with your slip assignment.

We are looking forward to another fun and exciting Desolation Sound Cruise!

Jeff

Santolina, R25SC, has arrived at Cap Sante Marina after the long trek from Texas. We are on Dock N, slip 40. Please stop by so we can get acquainted. The Wifi is sporadic, so feel free to call us at 903-931-3903. We are looking forward to meeting our travel mates and drawing upon the knowledge of experienced PNW cruisers.

Hello Tugnuts from Ganges,

There are 56 boats here in our "flotilla" today at beautiful Ganges. We hail from Georgia, Virginia, Texas, Michigan, Illinois, California, Oregon, Washington, Alberta and British Columbia, plus other states I no doubt missed. We have school-aged kids up to and including many retired folks. One couple arrived this afternoon with their brand new Ranger and there are quite a few others who have received their new boats this year. We also have some of the early Ranger Tugs here on the cruise.

Jeff Messmer and his family are heading up the cruise this year again, and tonight we celebrated his birthday. We also have Andrew Custer and his wife, Kenny Marr, and Capt. Mac LaMay and his wife. The Ranger crew has been very helpful troubleshooting as usual, exemplifying why we appreciate them so much.

Patrick Beattie has been our Dockmaster Extraordinaire these two plus (many) days and he and Gayle are great ambassadors again this year, welcoming us and helping in many ways.

Willie Stark is writing her daily blog with interesting photos and human interest pieces, and the rest of us are meeting and greeting, enjoying the fabulous weather, partaking of delicious Happy Hour treats, and smiling a great deal!

Tomorrow our Cutwater friends will be cruising north from Roche Harbor and joining up with us in Nanaimo, a beautiful harbor on Vancouver Island.

Our "flotilla" will be coming through the Dodd Narrows in pods at carefully planned times, with Ranger Jeff leading the first pod, avoiding the "Bathtub Race" in the Nanaimo harbor in the morning.

Good night to all from Ganges, on Saltspring Island in beautiful British Columbia.

What a weekend for the first leg of our Desolation Sound Cruise! The weather was absolutely spectacular! 55 Ranger Tugs and 1 Cutwater made it to Ganges Harbour and 15 Cutwater Boats made it to Roche Harbor for the weekend. We are off to Nanaimo this morning for the next leg of our cruise. There will be over 60 boats in Nanaimo this evening for the Port Boathouse salmon and chicken BBQ. It looks like it will be a beautiful day for this run. You can follow the fun at http://rangertugs.typepad.com/

Here is a teaser to Willie's Blog:

40 odd Boats in the Ranger Tug Armada made it through Dodd Narrows yesterday. The early in the day boats had to go outside and around through Gabriola Passage as the narrows was blocked by a log tow that misjudged time of slack in the morning.

GREAT aerial view of the tugs in Nanaimo! Kudos!

Greetings to all our Ranger buds on the Desolation Sound cruise, and enjoy Comox!

Saturday night Russ and Toni's Ranger 27 was parked in our driveway at Birch Bay for the day and overnight, a great visit!

Pat & Patty on 25 C-Dory Cruiser Daydream, wishing we were out cruising too...

Hi Patti and Pat,

I wish you were here also. I remember last summer when the C-Brats came up here and it sounded wonderful. And it is! I love the mountains with snow, the big water views, and the friendly people. Today I spoke with a couple who moved here a dozen years ago and understand this is drawing more and more boating retirees.

How nice that Toni and Russ stopped to see you! It was so fun to follow their adventures in a variety of places.Their stories and photos make me want to go north even more 🙂

However, now that we have been traveling, filling the fuel tank can be sobering. Since we are up north here near Desolation Sound, I expect there will be many of us anchoring out the rest of our time in the fun little inlets after our final group gathering tomorrow.

Cascadia has a solar panel that is keeping the refrigerator working and generating extra energy daily. This is a far cry from what I ever expected to experience, for sure. No need for shore power to Cascadia here, and I am thinking that it could work this way for at least a couple of months.

I hope that this will be the last summer that you will be tied down with work and the big downsizing. Ideally next year we will be reading about your various travel adventures on the water and off 😀

Thank you thank you, thank you! Not as wonderful as being there with you; but the photos bring back beautiful memories of our trip to D.S. last year. Have a most lovely continuation of the summer.

Wow.

I'm at a temporary loss for words to describe the adventures we had on the Desolation Sound Cruise.

Thanks to every one at Ranger Tug and to all the salts, old and young, for the tips and tricks we learned.

Our confidence on the water has taken a big step forward, and as I sit at a Ford dealer in Spokane waiting to change the oil in truck, the trailerable boat concept works as advertised.

Now here's a question: when does the rocking sensation that makes it seems like you're on the water go away?

Happy Cruising to all and hope to see y'all on the water soon,

Bill

RE: Rocking Motion
After more than 40 years of sail boating and power boating I still get a slight sensation of rocking after a prolonged rough trip. The effect lasts a day or two. The sensation is most pronounced when taking a shower. So how much you are affected depends on how clean you wish to be! 😉
