We have a Gala aluminum rib 8'10" that is rated for 10 hp. We have the weaver davit system that I installed. The Gala is a wide dingy 5'7". when mounted on the platform with original stand off location it sits 6' high reducing aft visibility. I installed additional mounting brackets to change the location and gain visibility. This new angle has reduced dingy movement, increased visibility , supports the dingy better and reduced spray at higher speeds. It also gives me the ability to tow the Cutwater with the dingy installed. It sits lower and rides better while towing over the road. I have the original brackets still installed and can position the dingy up so we can use the platform for grilling and showering while at anchor.

The one issue I had was lifting the boat up out of the water. It takes a great deal of lifting and pulling to lift the dingy. I also was at my limit for lifting my outboard off the boat. My plan was to reduce hp this year for a manageable weight motor. I had a 7.5hp Evinrude that would plane the boat with one person. I was looking at 2hp Suzuki but really wanted a motor that we could get on plane with 2 or three passengers. I knew I could not lift it safely off the dingy for storage on the boat.

I found this compact davit made by Garhauer marine and installed it in a out of the way location. I removed the port rod holder and used the existing hole and mounting screw holes to mount the support bushing.

The davit arm has a 34" reach. I have a few items to add to the davit to to help add the ease of retrieving the boat and engine.

I now can store the davit out of the way and when needed it takes less then a minute to set up. It will lower and raise the dingy with almost no effort. I can lift the motor off the dingy with with very little effort and swing the motor in the cockpit for storage. I did increase Hp to a 9.9 Mariner which launches the boat on plane with 2 passengers and easily exceeds 15 mph I think it is faster but that is as fast as I allowed it to go on our first trial run.

I will post photos in my album of the davit in operation this weekend. This is a back saver!

I'm posting a couple more photo's of the davit.
The davit is set up to lift motor and boat.

Ready to lift the boat up. one hand easy pull to lift.

The 9.9 pushes the Gala 270 21 mph with 2 people.

Great installation. It looks wonderful.

Even though we have a tiny 2.5 Mercury for the Dinghy, the Admiral has a tough time lifting it should she need too. This would be a great solution.

Thanks,
Mark

Dinghies, revisited...

I am contemplating dinghy mounting options for my 31 CB. I already have an engine (I actually have two, 6hp and 9.9hp). I currently have a 9' west marine with inflatable floor. Looking to move to a 10" aluminum rib, which weighs about 105 lbs.

Brian, I like the idea of your hoist system. Do you still have the Garhauer marine hoist? Would you purchase the same if you had it over to do? I'm also thinking weaver davits, but have not fully committed.

Currently with my 9' West Marine, I manhandle the dink up and over the stanchions and have it stand vertically. I do the same with the engine and mount it to the grab rail on the port side stern of the boat (not the swim platform stanchion). I like having the dink vertical because I have visibility on either side and can still troll and fish on either side of the swim platform when the dink is mounted here. It also blocks the sun from the cockpit during morning coffee.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has other ideas for a vertical mounted dink on the swim platform or hoists.

Thanks,
Bobby P.

Yes it is a Garhauer motor davit. Yes I would purchase it again. I have weaver davits and use the Garhauer davit to lift the engine off the tender and also use it to lift the tender up to the vertical position. I'm posting 3 links from photo albums. I have changed my tender choice from Rib to foldable because of weight. The tender is a Gala F270 High pressure air floor 65lbs, The tender in the photos is a Gala A270 aluminum Rib 112lbs.A270 and F270 are same tubes A270 RIB hull F270 inflatable hull. I also built a tender over the winter that I hope to use. I will still use the weaver davits and Garhauer davits to assist in lifting.

Brian, I sent you a PM. I’d like to see if we can talk about details of your installation. Thanks! Bobby

Did you have to support the crane/engine davit near the top? If so, where and how did you attach it?

I did not have to suport the mast at the top.

The davit is supported in the locations designed by Garhauer. The difference is I fabricated the supports to work on my boat. The mast supports are made at the base of the mast and then a 1 inch bushing made out of starboard supporting the mast at the deck.

The base installation is a stainless steel plate 5200 to the cockpit liner and thru bolted. This base area was found to be 1/4" thick fiberglass. There is also a backing plate installed under the liner.

The rod holder was removed and the factory cut hole was used for the mast to side down in position. I made a 1" thick bushing out of (2) 1/2" thick pieces of starboard. This supports the mast in the area designated by Garhauer. The starboard bushing is thru bolted using the holes used to mount the rod holder. 1/4 20 pan head screws were used to thru bolt the bushing instead of the #12 screws used to fasten the rod holders.
