What dish soap do folks use onboard? I always thought Dawn was safe for the water environment. I have been told no. It seems that all of the “safe” ones leave a greasy feel to the dishes.

I’ve used Campsuds biodegradable soap from REI. I use that stuff for camping as well. I’ve also used Dawn, but try to use environmental friendly products when I can. I think the key is to limit the amount of runoff when possible.

Commercial fisherman swear by dawn as they claim it is scentless and does not repel fish when they touch or bait their lines. I have heard it often enough, I buy these guys beers to get fishing tips, that I think there is something to it.

fmstuart: Have you found a product you’re comfortable with and would recommend? Waterknot, I will give Campsuds a try. I’m using Mrs. Meyers on board right now but wouldn’t recommend it as it is very soapy and needs too much water to rinse off. Does Campsuds rinse easily? (I believe Dawn does have some ingredients best not to be used in our environment, and hopefully people know not to use antibacterial soap products while boating.)

Thanks, Bruce. Good old Dr. Bronner’s....

Dawn Ultra is used by International Bird Rescue to clean / save birds from oil spills. The label shows no anti-bacterials or phosphates.
Can you cite your source for believing Dawn has ingredients best not to be used in our environment?

Already have a few bars of kirks Castile soap in the Cutwater. Been using them for a few years. That and scotchbrite can take care of a messy pan.

JeffRad54, your comment that Dawn Ultra was not antibacterial was surprising to me. It seems the antibacterial Triclosan was on the ingredient list as late as last year but has since been removed. Sorry for the shoddy research.

Campsuds works great hot or cold, salt or fresh! A little goes a long way and an easy rinse which helps with water conservation!

Thanks, pleeson. Sounds like a good one to try. I need the easy rinse for sure! Automaticman865, I have some Kirks at home and didn’t think to bring it onboard.
