Today I had my marina haul my R25 out of the water. My marina has two lifts; one with max of 8000 lbs and the other one a Travel Lift that provides some 50 tons. The 8000 lb lift has scales on both slings and each sling is rated for 4000 lbs. The 8000 lb lift is far far less expensive than the 50 ton Travel Lift. The 8000 lb lift cost around $40 round trip whereas the 50 ton lift cost around $240 round trip -- a huge difference. No matter, this post is an FYI for the boats weight as measured by the scales on the 8000 lb lift.

At first the scales showed some 5000 lbs for the stern sling and around 1500 lbs for the bow sling with the boat just slightly lifted from the water. These numbers are from what I recall. The slings were then repositioned and the scales showed 4300 lbs for the bow sling and 4500 lbs for the stern sling. This totals 8800 lbs. I was informed that the scales were also measuring the fabric slings, cables and metal cross bars supporting the slings -- which was said to be around 1000 lbs.

Thus my boat was weighing in at 7800 lbs according to the lift scales.

The marina refused to lift my boat out as the 8800 lbs exceeded the lifts max lifting weight. I had to use the more expensive 50 ton Travel Lift. 😱

My boat had 70 gal off fuel, 30 gal fresh water, waste tank was empty, swim mounted dingy weighed approx 150 lbs, and I estimated all the onboard gear weighed some 500 lbs. the 70 gal fuel would be around 600 lbs, the 30 gal fresh water would be around 300 lbs. This sums to 150 + 500 + 600 + 300 = 1550 lbs.

I'm told the R25 (MY2010 and 150 HP Yanmar engine) weighs around 5800 lbs without gear and fuel.

Question: Does the 1509 HP Yanmar engine have Aluminum block or is it caste iron ?

Thus my estimated weight comes to 5800 + 1550 = 7350 lbs.

This 7350 then compared to 7800 as measured by the scales is somewhat close I guess.

If I believe the scales, then my boat was weighing some 7800 lbs.

The marina claims the scales were checked and I could review the paper work if I wished.

Do you know the weight of your boat ? You might just get a surprise. 😉

My R-27 boat on trailer weighed in at 11,244 lbs. The trailer weighs about 1,500 so boat alone with 53 gallons of fuel and 13 gallons of water comes in at 9,725 with all supplies, clothes, two folding bikes, tools and other equipment. By the way, this also includes the wifes toiletries and makeup!

Barry,

I weighed my 2008 R-25 with a 110 HP Yanmar on the trailer at a truck stop. It was 9400 lbs including 1700 lbs for the trailer, half fuel and water (about 500 lbs) and about 200 lbs of tools and supplies. This leaves an empty weight of about 7000 lbs. My boat has a lighter engine than yours, so that may explain much of the difference. I don't have a generator or AC, so some R-25's are probably considerably heavier. If I fill the tanks, I'm close to 10,000 lbs on the trailer, which is much more than the GVWR of some of the trailers used to haul these boats. That may explain the tire issues that at least one owner has reported on this forum.

It's my understanding that the 5750 lb displacement in the brochure was an early boat that was completely empty. Recall that the original engine was 80 hp. Thrusters were an option. It probably also didn't include instruments, antennas, mast, windlass, anchor, 4th battery, sport rack, autopilot, etc. It may not have even been weighed with a table or cushions.

From a post I made in Sept 2011:

We towed Willie's Tug into a Flying J yesterday and used the scales to get an accurate weight of our rig. Our gross combined vehicle weight is 19,620#. Our truck weighs 8380# by itself, giving us a net weight of 11,240# for the boat and trailer. The tongue weight of the trailer is 1260#. Interesting that the front axle of our truck weighs 320# less when the trailer is attached, 4440# vs 4760#.

I guess that I could find the bare trailer weight from EZ Loader for the trailer, but if we figure 1500-2000 for it, that would put the 27 at somewhere between 9200-9700 lbs.

With these weights can you imagine trailering a new 31 any long distance. You'd really be pushing the window of common sense.
Not to mention the paper work for each state.

When we get our 27 we plan on pulling it with one of these...

If you don't recognize it from the picture it is a Freightliner Cascadia. I definitely wouldn't pull a 31 with anything less.

Now if I could just find that winning Mega Millions ticket we would be all set... 😉

I finally took the time to have our R 27 and EZLoader trailer weighed. The combo came in at 10,760 lbs and that included 50 gallons of fuel, 20 gallons of water and half loaded with non perishables and cloths. Our HD GMC weighs 7560 so at a combined weight of 18,320 the weight comes in nicely below the GCWR max limit of 24,500. Our R27 has a genset and solar panel, which adds some weight but it appears we're also in line with others that have gone thru the process. I had ours weighed at our local gravel yard and they were nice enough to not charge us.

So.... how much does JUST your R27 weigh ? If you know weight of the EZLoader trailer then subtracting that from 10,760 lbs would give the R27's weight, right ?

You are absolutely correct. I was not sure on the trailer weight so I emailed EZ loader to ask that question. As soon as I find out I'll repost, unless someone else has that information? By the way, that weight didn't include the dinghy or outboard.

FYI, Barry on Laxey asked about the weight of our trailer. Our EZLoader aluminum trailer weighs 1,868 lbs. When subtracted from the 10.760 combined weight this leaves our R27 weighing in at 8,892 lbs. This is less then reported by others but our dinghy, outboard and cloths are all off of the boat.

Jim, I think we have the same trailer. EZ Loader, Aluminum, with two axles, and electric over hydraulic, with bunks.
So mine should weigh about the same.

It is one and the same. I got the weight numbers from Andrew earlier today so yours should be identical.

Thanks Jim

FYI the R 31 loaded with all options on a Float On 15k capacity trailer weighed 14780 Lbs. with about 20 gallons fuel and a light gear on board .Weighed on certified Cat scale .My dually Dodge pulls it with no problem . We calculated the boat at about 12k.
My truck can tow somewhere over 17k.

Marc,

What kind of hitch are you using to tow the R-31? Here's a note from the Ram 3500 towing guide;

"The maximum trailer weight is 5,000 lbs. for a weight-carrying hitch. A weight distributing system is recommended for trailers over 5,000 lbs. A fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch is required for trailers over 12,000 lbs."

This is on page 30 at http://www.ramtrucks.com/en/towing_guid ... .Specs.pdf
