I have a congenital fear of getting a line in the prop, and looked for a good solution. I found these "button hangers" online, originally at Lats and Atts, but now other online places as well. They work very well and serve to keep the lines not only handy, but up off the deck. I also added cam cleats for the midship lines for an added measure of security. That way, the line hanger is not the only thing keeping the line from going overside. The cam cleats were added to the quarter lines for the same purpose, and also serve as quick (but not long-term) fender hangers. The button hangers are adhesive and have been on Nellie May I for three years without failure. The cam cleats were thru bolted with backing plates.

I like your post about dock lines, plan to look into it. Thanks for the post,

I have docklineaphobia. I have backed our R-29, Ladybug, Too into many very tight places only to have my seamanship destroyed as I fumble with the lines. Typically it is long lines aft to cross tie with short lines forward to the pilings. A spring line is added to keep the swim platform out from under the pier. The tangled mess on my decks looks like a complete amateur got hold of things. Today was an example as I got into a slip with boats everywhere, windage and no one caring about the no wake sign. Then I fumbled with the lines like an idiot. I got it done but only after my wife let me know that I was taking up slack in the wrong direction. I need organization. Thanks for the post.

Pat,
Ladybug, Too

Very smart loking and very efficient. Congratulations on a professional looking vessel. Regards, Stevan

Very nice! Got to get some of these, thanks for sharing.

tlkenyon: Hope you don't mind but I stole your idea and made a couple changes. I liked the button hangers but since I was going to hide everything behind the coaming, I figured I could make the hangers out of some scrap wood and line that I had. Check out my photo album for the pics.
Regards,
Tom
