I like the way our R25 moves through choppy water - thinking about an R23 - Is it going to be fairly comparable? What are your thoughts on the R23? We are not going to be doing long term cruising.

Unless you are going to be using the 23 as a low speed boat I don't think that the ride characteristics are going to be comparable. The 23 is a planing hull and cruises on top of the water. In rough stuff it is necessary to slow it down of course.

We have been out in 2-4 several times and were comfortable, 4-6 the boat seemed happy but we weren't.

Having said all that, if you are not planning on long term cruising and you find that day trips, or weekends, are enough for you then the 23 will open up your circle considerably. We can do Friday Harbor to Victoria for lunch and be back in the early afternoon if we don't decide to walk around town. You can easily do 60-70 miles on a calm morning which makes the possibilities for trip much greater than if you are limited to 15 knots or so.

We have never experienced an R25 but we can speak about an R23.

At the speeds you operate your R25, we suspect the character of the ride would be comparable due to similar waterline length, freeboard, displacement, and beam.

When you plane an R23, choppy water takes on a different character. We need about 30 mph to hold the boat on plane when heading into wind and chop. At that speed, we deal with pounding and some spray over the bow, but the weight of the boat keeps it comfortable/tolerable. When chop develops into swells (wave length >3'-5'), we drop off plane and plow along as you would in an R25.
