We got a dog! curious if your dogs have boots? we are worried about our puppy running around the beach if there are barnacles.
thanks,
Lisa

We've been boating with dogs for over 15 years on barnacle covered rocks/shale/etc. Never used booties on them and have only had one or two pad cuts over the years. I'd be worried about oysters in southern waters but barnacles aren't bad. That said ours didn't get tested until 6 mos old or more. Tender puppy feet would likely suffer a bit.

Hi Lisa, We used doggie booties on our lab. We were worried that his nails would get caught on the ramps going down to the docks. First time you put them on your dog you will just about die laughing. It takes them a little while to get used to them. They work really well. Also, If it is muddy out their feet stay clean!

We used EXPAWLORER Waterproof Dog Boots. Got them on Amazon. I think around $20.

Congratulations on the new family member.

John

Thanks for the tips! We were worried about barnacles on the beach and hot asphalt in town. So far Rusty has been doing great on the walk ways.

Lisa, congratulations on your new puppy! Did you get a Golden Retreiver as previously indicated?

Our Golden, Moxie, is now 4 years old, has been boating since we bought Seaquel 4 years ago as a puppy. She has been on every sort of beach, trail, asphalt, barnacles, etc. and has not once cut her paws. Last year Moxie ran all over the oyster beds of Desolation Sound - nothing could be sharper - and she remained unscathed (unlike her aqua-sock wearing master!). There may be some slight risk as a puppy, but dog’s paws are tough. Running around “au naturel” will likely just toughen them up sooner.

Also, if your dog likes the water (and if she is a Golden she will), I can’t imagine the nuisance of booties on & off for swimming vs. beachcombing. Sometimes these are simultaneous activities. Booties may even be dangerous when the dog goes in for a swim?

We did a Golden Retriever!!! We picked up Rusty on April 14th (he was 8 weeks). He hasn't tried swimming yet, and the few times we did have him on the boat, we were limited to his outings due to shots. But now he has all his shots we will be out and about more. Thanks for the info, things we didn't think about with a dog on board. I posted a few pictures of Rusty in my album adventres.

something to think about...
Down at the marina yesterday in Seattle I was washing the boat barefoot and the dock was painfully hot under foot - no way I could stand still without wetting the black concrete. I was seeing a number of dogs being walked through the marina by owners who had no idea the pontoons were so hot. I could see dogs shuffling on their feet in pain. 🙁
