Hi - we have not yet picked up our boat yet, but already wondering about our 35 pound aussiedoodle age 1.7 and 65 pound goldendoodle age 10.5. Could anyone please share best practices about bathroom and other training? We pick up our boat in a month and I would like to be prepared! Thanks!

Not sure my comments will be of much value but here they are nonetheless. My wife and I have a much smaller ~5+ pound Yorkie. Because we live in the Las Vegas valley there isn't much grass here for her to enjoy. We have no grass at our house so for her potty area I laid a 4x4 foot section of artificial turf that she has learned to use for her potty trips. We like to get away from the summer heat so we trailer our 23' C-Dory to points elsewhere, especially the Pacific Northwest. For our little dog, who we got well after our C-Dory, we were initially a bit perplexed about what to do if anchored out. I then cut a small section of the leftover turf and put it in the cockpit with a rimmed silicon mat underneath to contain liquid. Turns out this works great and she quickly adapted to using it. Granted I can use a much smaller piece of turf for a 5 pound dog, but the Tugs have a bigger cockpit than we do so maybe it equals out.

Raw water wash down?
Works for the grand kids!

All joking aside about the meaning of a poop deck!
You might want to get a hold of a school for the dogs that are trained for the blind. They train them to deposit there goodies in a special place so even a blind person can pick up. I'm sure there is a blind center in your area that will point you in the right direction.

We've trained ours to go on the swimstep then we rinse with the raw water washdown.

You don't need a school. I train working dogs. It should be relatively easy.

1) Start by training your dogs to go on command. Every time they go use a command. We use "last pee" (yeah, covers poop too). Say it EVERY time they go. Then once they associate it, basically start reversing it. First you're just associating the command, then you're using it for cause and effect.
2) There are two fairly simple ways that I know of to get a dog to go in a specific spot.
a) Spread newspaper over your entire cockpit. Then as the dog learns to use the newspaper, start removing most of it until you've got a little square in the cockpit. Use the for a while, and then just remove that last little square. Usually they'll stick to that spot.
b) if they usually are dogs that go on grass, you might be able to just get a bit of turf and do roughly the same but without covering the whole deck. That's what I did/do with dogs for my boat.

Combine the two and I just say, "last pee" and my dogs go over to the spot and go....
