Hello Tugnuts,

We have found that after a recent service, which included flushing and replacing all of the coolant, we're getting a drip every so often from the coolant drain cock. We have a 6BY2 engine and this plug has a very unique design, making me think there is a specific wrench to tighten and remove. Is this so or is a simple (and small) crecent wrench the answer? I'm worried about stripping the edges of the bolt, as it is in such tight quarters. I have managed to tighten it by hand but after a 2-3 hour trip going 12 or so knots it shakes loose and there is noticable coolant drips at bottom of engine quarters.

Thanks,

Paul

I've found that a universal wrench works. It looks like an e-tork gear wrench would also work.

I have done that coolant change-out on Andiamo, a R-29, and that drain cock is plastic, so be careful on using tools on it. Yes, a standard crescent wrench can be used to tighten it and that is what I did. Apparently, your drain cock is not completely seated in the block.

If you check out our website, there is a page on operations and maintenance with photos that shows you how I did that operation. Maybe it will be helpful.

Thank you Andiamo!

Yes, you are correct, the screw is plastic and I learnt the hard way. Tightened it this weekend and the nut popped right off leaving the broken thread in the cock drain pipe. After finally managing to unscrew it with a leatherman the coolant came flying out. I replaced the broken part with a metal universal drain cock screw which is much more secure, this part was readily available at my local hardware store (Harbor Marine in Everett).

Thanks again!
