I am in the process of winterizing the water heater and following the procedure found on page 8 (6. Maintenance; 6.1 Winter Drain). I opened the air bleeder screw mounted on the mixing valve and then opened the drain valve on the waste water outlet. On the bottom of the waste water outlet there is a red water line that travels towards the bow and then disappears from view.

Just want to confirm that the red water line on the bottom of the waste water outlet drains into the bilge.

Appreciate the help!

We have the same boat so I’ve become familiar with this process. Yes the red hose heads to a hole, along with a drain hose from the A/C unit if you have one, that goes down into the bulge area at the foot of your stateroom floor. The A/C hose attaches to the shower sump whereas the water heater hose drains into the bulge, where it will work it’s way back to the stern of the boat to drain out of the hull plug hole or by the rear bulge pump if still activated.

Thanks Jim for confirming and our recent conversation on the winterizing process.

FYI - I used air to winterize the potable water system. Very easy once I figured out how to drain the water heater.

I have a 2017 27. I found no red hose on the water heater drain. I opened the valve assuming the water would run harmlessly down into the bilge. Nano is on the hard with a pronounced pitch to the stern. Imagine my surprise that the starboard cockpit locker didn't drain into the bilge! That’s not safe. Did I miss something besides the red hose?

The drain hose I mentioned is on an R29S, it could be different on the R27. Your locker should have weep holes that are meant for drainage. These weep holes get clogged with construction debris and from normal draining and need to be cleaned out with a coat hanger or fish line to help maintain proper water drainage. The best place to access these weep holes is from the engine compartment.

Has Jim has stated the limber holes can be plugged with material from the boat build or debris in the bilge area. If the water sits in the compartment and doesn't drain it can cause damage in the future. The drain should have a hose (clear water hose) that is routed into the engine compartment. Many times the hot water heater will not drain properly by just opening the drain valve. It air locks. I lift the arm on pressure relieve valve to manually open the valve, this allows it to vent and drain properly. Opening faucets only doesn't always vent the tank. I would make sure the tank actually drained. If so then try to find out where the water drained to.

On the Isotemp when you opened the bleeder screw, were you able to get a hose or something on the waste outlet? the way mine was installed is soo tight to the bottom i just had to let it drain in the locker and soak up as much with towels as possible.

I had a water line on the waste water outlet that drained the water into the bilge. Easy to drain!

I have added a picture of heater to my album
