I'm taking delivery of a new Cutwater 28 in a few weeks, and based on prior boats owned, (last boat had twin Volvo D-6's) am looking to have a Dual Racor Filter Unit installed to replace the OEM, Single unit. The reason is that fuel is the #1 source of diesel engine problems and non one wants to stand on their head for an hour swapping out a fouled primary fuel filter. A Dual Racor allows a simple 180-degree turn of the valve to use the second filter, earning some time to find a good spot to change the first filter and figure out what's going on with my fuel.

Any first-hand experiences with chaning out the OEM Racor with a Dual Racor unit?

Thanks.

We just completed a change out from the OEM to a Racor primary fuel filter. While you are thinking about the dual units, we stuck with a single primary filter/water separator for our 6BY2-260 Yanmar. We included a vacuum gage with tell tale indicator to warn of filter blinding. The Racor set up uses easily changed filter elements. The swap out does not require removal of a filter "element can" but rather a simple element that is inserted from the top. We chose 20 micron for the primary since the engine fine filter unit is 2 micron and in my opinion should remain a "genuine Yanmar part" as it is the final protection for the injectors. These common rail diesels run at extremely high fuel pressures that range from 6,000 to more than 20,000 psi. That makes fuel filtration very important to say the least. We experienced two fuel supply failures in the middle of Pensacola Pass, one on Labor Day weekend with plenty of traffic. It scared the #@$% out of us. The change has been great. It took about 2 hours for us to change fittings, mount the unit, bleed the air out and clean up.

Ladybug:

I've been trying to hunt down the correct racor turbine part number - no one seems to know whether the water detector will thread into a racor turbine or whether all racor turbines have threads... did you encounter this? what part numbers did you use? Even emails to Mr. Gonzales on the subject have gone without answer.

Thanks!!

Circusmar,

The water detector element from our Yanmar primary filter threaded into the Racor with no problem. We have Ladybug, Too on the trailer doing some compounding and waxing along with some other work. I will get the numbers off the Racor in the next day or so and post them. I'll try to get a good picture of the install and post that too.

I added a new, easily accessed dual filter (Racors) system so that I can turn a couple of valves if I ever get a plugged filter. I did this because I put some bad fuel in the tank and almost got stranded a couple yrs ago. Pictures are available in my "photo's".

Sidetrack,
Can you provide additional detail about your Dual Racor conversion?
Volvo or Yanmar motor?
Same bulkhead location or re-location?
I asked my dealer to measure the available space between the existing Primary filter and the side of the Volvo D-4 body. Unfortunately, there's not enough space between the OEM location of thier Primary filter and the Dual Racor unit I was hoping for due to the Racor's bracket.
Next week, I'm heading over to the local Hinckley Marina in Savannah to see if they can install a second Primary filter AND a "Y" valve to switch between Primaries quickly and simply; allowing me to swap out the filter elements at a less-excited pace.
