Last year, I trailered my R27 to Pioneer Marina on Lake Winnebago at Oshkosh, Wisconsin to use as accommodations during the EAA Airventure airshow. It’s about the cheapest lodging you’ll find during the show. The marina has a great boat ramp, there are showers and laundry and it is close to the airport— it’s a 20 minute bike ride from the marina to the NW show entry gate at the North 40 airplane campground ticket booth. The bikes eliminate car parking fuss or waiting for a shuttle or bus.

I’m going to do it again this year. It should be a really good show. The show highlights this year are “Year of the Fighter” and activities related to the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. After the show, I may trailer up to Sturgeon Bay and cruise on Green Bay for a few days. If you have a spot at the Charlevoix rendezvous, this could segue into that.

If any Tugnut pilots or aviation enthusiasts want to join my 32 year-old daughter and me, PM me or reply to this thread and I can provide more details. During the show, we may make a couple short cruises on Lake Winnebago, depending on weather and the evening schedule. One cruise may be a 12-mile (one-way) trip across the lake to Jim & Linda’s Supper Club.

This sounds interesting. I can't do it this year, but I will plan ahead for next year. I haven't been to the Airventure in 20 years and I would like to go back. I stayed in the dorms last time, I would prefer to stay on my boat if I could.

Starting in 1980, I flew in 20+ years straight and camped with the airplane. Then I flew in and stayed at the dorms. And lastly, I drove and stayed at the dorms. Those dang dorm rooms are $125 a night for one with air conditioning!

Since you haven’t been in 20 years, you will be surprised by all the changes. The grounds have been expanded and food options on the show grounds are much improved.

Bill,
We will be heading up to Sturgeon bay leaving Racine Wisconsin July 27. Our destination is the rendezvous in Charlevoix. Sturgeon Bay to Frankford is the shortest distance for crossing Lake Michigan . We plan to stay at Skipper Buds quarter deck marina while we wait for a decent day to cross to Frankford. We went to Port Washington Wis for the 4th and returned yesterday in Flat to 1'waves. Today are we stuck in the harbor with waves 4' to 6' increasing to 5' to 7'. You never know what to expect this year on Lake Michigan. Maybe we will see you when you are in Sturgeon bay. Your trip to Lake Winnebago sound great. I've never been but I have heard it is a great Air Show.

Last time I was there I flew in, with my Long-ez, with the "Glass Overcast" event. I stayed in an un-airconditioned room, I didn't know rooms with AC existed. I haven't flown in 17 years and I am starting to get the bug again. I also need to find my log books, which I haven't seen in 15 years.

We will leave Oshkosh and trailer to Sturgeon Bay on the 27th or 28th. We will keep in touch. We are going to stay on Green Bay for sure. I’m trying to broaden my experience with “big water”. Two foot waves are about as big as I’ve seen.

Living so close to Oshkosh, you really should experience Airventure. There are aircraft of every description— homebuilts, warbirds, antiques, classics, military. This year UPS is flying in a brand new 747-800F and putting it on display for three days.

Just like in boating, there have been quantum leaps in electronic capabilities in your flying hiatus . Even four-seat fixed gear airplanes are being retrofitted with “glass” cockpits that weren’t even a fantasy when I started flying. A digital DME was hot stuff back then. A 4-waypoint VOR-based RNAV was cosmic!

When I was flying, having a handheld GPS for navigation was hot stuff, and not cheap. The planes I have been looking at have had all glass cockpits, no round dials anywhere, no radio knobs. EVERYTHING is controlled via a touch screen. With all the issues folks have with Garmins in our boats, I am not sure I want them controlling everything in a plane.

Two foot waves is all I want see no more than that. For trips on the Lake 2' or less is my doable. 2' on Lake Michigan always seem higher because of the 3 to 4 second period. We have run in 3' to 4' but that is not a comfortable ride. The boat handles it well enough for a small boat but it just isn't enjoyable. We will get a flat water day when we cross to Michigan. I'll wait for it! 2' foot is big enough!

Might want to visit the seaplane base, it has always been a great place for comradery and war stories, camping and there might be a dock or anchorage. Shuttle to main event and back several times a day...

And what I thought was two feet was most likely my vivid imagination, although I’ve had water break over the bow and wash over the deck under the windshield. There’s at least one Dual 150 Bluetooth GPS I know of swimming with the fishes in Charlotte Harbor.....

I’ve taken the shuttle to the seaplane base, a neat place for sure. When I was there last year, there was a several-boat-strong law enforcement presence to keep recreational boats away.

So that's why the seaplane waterway is clear all the time...
