Hello,

My MDI on my 2014 21ec failed. I replaced it; it is still having intermittent problems. I need to rig up up an emergency starter button and I’m hoping someone can send me a wiring schematic. I think I have a decent idea, but want to be 100% sure so I don’t fry something out and cause a bigger issue.

Could someone that’s done this job sketch up a diagram/schematic and post it here in the comments?

Thanks!
Tyler

This has been discussed pretty extensively under "MDI box" Basically all you need to do is connect a pushbutton switch from a 12v power source to the the terminal on the box (one of three studs on bottom) labeled "starter".

Thanks, Larry. What gauge wire would you recommend?

Tyler, it's a easy modification to install, parts from your local auto supplier. Since I have the yanmar it would be better to get your info from another volvo owner. I would check with saltwater joy (Neff)
Also remember that with this modification you are bypassing the glow plugs so will not start as easy if cold. You can jumper the glow plugs too if needed. Bob

It's not high current. 12 Ga would do fine. If you decide to jumper the glow plugs also, it's much higher current. I would just duplicate whatever ga is attached to the MDI glow plug terminal. Unless it's quite cold the engine will start OK without glow plugs.
